Rutgers Swimming & Diving Holds First Meet Of Season
Freshman Brittany Kuras posts four gold finishes

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Oct. 24, 2009) – The Rutgers swimming and diving team concluded their first meet of the season Saturday at the Sonny Werblin Recreation Center. The story of the day came from freshman Brittany Kuras (Canandaigua, N.Y.), who posted four first place finishes.

In the 200 IM, Kuras finished with a time of 2:05.73 for the gold. She finished first in the 100 and 200 free with times of 52.74 and 1:54.01, respectively. The rookie also won the 100 breast with a time of 1:06.01.
 
Another rookie with a strong showing was Melanie Gaffey (Bohemia, N.Y.). The freshman grabbed the gold in the 50 free with a time of 24.61. In the 100 free, Gaffey touched in 54.25 for second place, while finishing third in the 200 free with a time of 1:58.68. 
 
Senior Jacquelyn Klein (Campbell Hall, N.Y.) boasted two first place finished in the 100 and 200 fly, finishing in 57.78 and 2:07.44, respectively. She also grabbed the silver in the 200 IM with a time of 2:09.31. In the 500 free, the senior ranked third, touching in 5:07.12.
 
Finishing second in the 50 free (25.62) and 200 back (26.57), sophomore Brianne Lindblad (Kent, Wash.) also notched a first place finish in the 100 back with a time of 58.14.
 
On the diving boards, senior Erin Saunders (Holmes, Pa.) grabbed first in the three meter with 272.95 points and one meter (298.30).
 
In the relays, Catherine Whetstone, Shayna Longacre, Klein and Kuras swam the 200 yard medley in 1:46.90 for a first place finish. The Scarlet Knights went one-two in the 400 yard freestyle relay. The A squad (Longacre, Klein, Taylor Zafir, and Lindblad) touched in 3:38.41 for first, while the B team (Jessica Simunek, Gaffey, Jacquelyn Ward, and Taylor Curado) finished just behind with a time of 3:41.35.
