Women Finish Second, Men Wrap-Up Third Place

  • EAST MEADOW, NY – The Rutgers men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams wrapped up competition at the 2003 BIG EAST Championships on Saturday at the Goodwill Games Pool. The RU women placed second, 150 points behind seven-time defending champion Notre Dame. The men finished in third place, 169.5 points back of Pittsburgh, who also won its seventh consecutive title on Saturday.

    The highlight of the day for the Rutgers women was freshman Kelly Harrigan (Bristol, CT), who, just a day after breaking the school record in the 100-yard backstroke, shattered the conference record in the 200-yard event. Her time of 1:56.02, is also a new school record and NCAA A cut.

    Freshman Katie Kuczmarkski (Wilmington, DE) became the second RU woman to break a school record on the day, swimming the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:19.12 during the morning’s preliminary competition. She placed seventh in the evening’s finals.

    Senior Erin McIntyre (Broomfield, CO) placed second in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:34.34, while senior Andrea Miller (White Plains, NY) finished fourth in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:02.89.

    Two Scarlet Knight swimmers placed in the top five in the 100-yard freestyle event with junior Casmera Wick (Longmont, CO) finishing second with a time of 50.50 and sophomore Kelly Roche (Redding, CA) placing fifth with a time of 50.97. Both swimmers earned BIG EAST B cut times.

    The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Roche, Wick, Harrigan and sophomore Ruth Nichols (Raleigh, NC) broke the school record and set a BIG EAST B cut time of 3:23.05 on there way to a second place finish.

    On the men’s side, junior Matt Campbell (Haddonfield, NJ) broke the school record with a time of 44.44 on his way to a second place finish in the 100-yard freestyle event.

    The 400-yard freestyle relay team of senior Mike Kush (Wescosville, PA), sophomore Ivan Morse (Pleasanton, CA), freshman Ryan Campbell (Haddonfield, NJ) and Matt Campbell placed second with a new school-record and BIG EAST B cut time of 2:59.45.

    The men’s 1650-yard freestyle saw junior Sean Smith (Oklahoma City, OK) finish third with a time of 15:34.15. Freshman Jamie Miller (Hamburg, NY) placed fourth in the event, clocking in at 15:46.33.

    Sophomore Jon Stinson (North Cape May, NJ) finished second in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:47.90. Sophomore Josh Van Norman (San Diego, CA) placed fourth in the event with a time of 1:48.27.

    Freshman Tyler Clark (Granada Hills, CA) finished sixth overall in the 200-yard butterfly for RU.

    Junior Nathan Ilnicki (Crescent, PA) swam the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:02.81 to win the consolation finals and place ninth overall in the event for the Scarlet Knights.

    Individuals of both the Scarlet Knight men and women will conclude their seasons at the NCAA Championships. The women’s championship will be held in Auburn, AL, Mar. 20-22, while the men’s championship will take place in Austin, TX, Mar. 27-29.
