The highlight of the day for Rutgers came when junior Matt Campbell (Haddonfield, NJ) won the 50-yard freestyle, setting a Uris Pool record with a time of 20.24. His mark lowers the previous pool record of 20.67 set by Columbia’s Gered Doherty in 2000. The time also is within .14 second of his school record of 20.10 and currently ties for the 12th fastest time in the nation. His younger brother, freshman Ryan Campbell (Haddonfield, NJ) placed third in the event, clocking in at 21.26.
Matt Campbell also won the 100-yard freestyle event with a time of 45.78.
Junior Sean Smith (Oklahoma City, OK) swam the 1000-yard freestyle in 9:28.98 to take top honors for the Scarlet Knights. Smith also won the 500-yard freestyle event, timing in at 4:36.77 and led the Scarlet Knights in the 400 IM, placing second overall with a time 4:04.76. He was one of three RU swimmers to finish in the top four in the 400 IM as sophomore Joe Mammano (Flushing, NY) and freshman Jamie Miller (Hamburg, NY) took third and fourth respectively.
The men’s 400 medley relay team of sophomore Josh Van Norman (San Diego, CA), Matt Campbell, sophomore Ivan Morse (Pleasanton, CA) and freshman Eric Jennings (Edmond, OK) finished first with a time of 3:27.81.
The 200-yard freestyle event saw Morse place first with a time of 1:41.62. Van Norman finished third, swimming the event in 1:44.17.
Freshman Olivier Giron (Fairfax, VA) placed second in both the one-meter and three-meter diving competitions, scoring 229.425 and 245.175 points respectively.
Freshman Tyler Clark (Granada Hills, CA) took first place in the 200-yard butterfly, timing in at 1:53.13. Junior Drew Burton (Sacramento, CA) placed second with a time of 1:55.37.
Van Norman won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:52.05, while junior Kevin Hart (Piscataway, NJ) placed second in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:10.44
Matt Campbell, Ryan Campbell, junior Nathan Ilnicki (Crescent, PA) and freshman Derek Kwok (Sayreville, NJ) powered the 200 freestyle relay team to a second place finish with a time of 1:24.83
The men will return to action next Saturday, Feb. 1, joining the women in a dual meet against Penn State at 1 p.m. inside the Rutgers Aquatics Center. RESULTS
