PISCATAWAY, NJ – Erin Howarth and Sean Smith have been hired as assistant swimming coaches at Rutgers University, head coach Chuck Warner announced today.
Howarth developed into a national level swimmer under Coach Don Lemieux at the Greenwood Memorial program in Gardner, MA. She was a three time all-American swimmer at the University of Texas and showed her leadership skills early within the UT Student Athletic Advisory Committee. Howarth recently completed her master’s degree in educational psychology at the University of Connecticut. At Connecticut, she was promoted from graduate assistant her first year into the lead assistant coaching role from 2003 through 2005.
“Erin is one of the most outstanding young coaches in the United States,” stated head coach Chuck Warner. “She has a wonderful blend of communication skills, an understanding of what is necessary to compete on the world class level and the kind of organizational skills most great coaches have. We are absolutely thrilled that Erin is committed to moving Rutgers higher in the national picture.”
Also joining the Scarlet Knights coaching staff is Sean Smith, the 2005 BIG EAST Men’s Swimmer of the Year. Smith served as the Rutgers team captain last year, is a three event Olympic Trial qualifier and served as co-chairman of the Rutgers Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) his senior year.
“I’d been thinking about asking Sean to coach with us for quite some time,” explained Warner. “His love of swimming, his knowledge of Rutgers and his very impressive work ethic are all qualities that should help him become an outstanding coach.”
