PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams earned a pair of convincing victories in in-state rivals Seton Hall and Rider on Wednesday at the Sonny Werblin Recreation Center. The men defeated Rider 175.00-122.00 and Seton Hall 168.00-129.00 while the women topped Rider 175.00-105.00 and Seton Hall 155.00-137.00.
On the men’s side (3-1, 2-0 BIG EAST), the Scarlet Knights were paced by nine first-place finishes, including two each from Jonathan Hupp (Mobile, AL), Ivan Morse (Pleasanton, CA), Jared Bench (West Babylon, NY) and Sean Smith (Oklahoma City, OK). Hupp took top honors in the 200 breaststroke (2:08.40) and 400 individual medley (4:07.93) while also finishing third in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.69). Morse won the 200 freestyle (1:41.93) and 100 freestyle (46.14) while Bench was first in the 1-meter dive and 3-meter dive. Smith won the 1000 free (9:38.16) and 1650 free (16:05.40). William Dennis (West Long Branch, NJ) also won the 100 butterfly (51.80).
The 200 medley relay team of Josh Van Norman (San Diego, CA), Aaron Inkrott (Bartlesville, OK), Eric Jennings (Edmond, OK) and Morse finished in third place and Van Norman also finished third in the 100 backstroke (53.19). In the 100 breaststroke, Dennis was second (1:00.48) and Hupp was third (1:00.69). Tyler Clark (Granada Hills, CA) finished second in the 200 butterfly (1:55.81) while teammate Adam Dimenna (Philadelphia, PA) was third (2:00.97). RU had three placewinners in the 200 backstroke – Alan Bakes (Browns Mills, NJ) (third, 1:57.53), Clark (fourth, 1:57.62) and Scott Thompson (Birmingham, MI) (fifth, 1:59.61). Bakes was also second in the 500 freestyle (4:50.46). Larry Rosa (West Windsor, NJ) finished second in the 400 IM (4:12.34). Thompson and Rosa also finished second and third, respectively, in the 1650 free. James Miller (Hamburg, NY) was third in the 200 breaststroke (2:12.43).
On the women’s side (4-0, 2-0 BIG EAST), Allyson Parent (Glens Falls, NY) and Molly Jones (Lodi, CA) each won two events. Parent took top honors in the 200 freestyle (1:56.11) and 200 breaststroke (2:29.43) while Jones won the 100 backstroke (1:56.11) and 200 backstroke (2:09.03). Rutgers also received first-place showings from Sara Gault (Chateauguay, Quebec) (100 breaststroke, 1:07.12), Kelly Harrigan (Bristol, CT) (50 freestyle, 24.00), Mindy Tang (Durham, NC) (100 freestyle, 54.36), Megan Senso (Neenah, WI) (3-meter dive) and Erica Moreland (Schenectady, NY) (1-meter dive).
The 200 medley relay team of Parent, Gault, Kelly Roche (Redding, CA) and Sara Bicknell (Pleasant Valley, IA) took top honors, followed in second place by Allie Dean (Buffalo, NY), Harrigan, Erin McKinley (Princeton, NJ) and Jones. Roche was also second in the 200 free (1:56.92) while Ruth Nichols (Raleigh, NC) was second in the 100 back (1:01.53). Parent finished second in the 200 butterfly (2:07.72), while Angelina Colavito (Las Vegas, NV) and Bicknell finished second and third, respectively, in the 50 free. Dean was second in the 100 free (55.20) and third in the 100 butterfly while Bicknell was second in the 200 backstroke (2:09.80). Annie Goldstein (Barrington, RI) and Catherine Hetzel (Metuchen, NJ) were second and third, respectively, in the 500 free.
Rutgers returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 15, when it travels to Richmond, VA, to face Richmond, Duke and James Madison at noon. RESULTS
