PISCATAWAY, N.J. (May 8, 2014) – The Rutgers swimming and diving team has completed its 2014 recruiting class with the additions of Morgan Engel (Mound, Minn.), Thomasin Lee (Lindstrom, Minn.) and Karli Rymer (Long Branch, N.J.), head coach Phil Spiniello announced Thursday.
The three will join Emily Erwin (Jenkintown, Pa.), Larissa Neilan (Orange, Va.), Julianne Torres (Piscataway, N.J.) and Addison Walkowiak (Ballston Spa, N.Y.), who all signed their national letters of intent during the early signing period.
“Adding these three athletes to our team helps us finish out a well-rounded and talented recruiting class,” said Spiniello. “We are excited for next season as we transition into the Big Ten Conference.”
Diving Coach Fred Woodruff on Engel- “We are excited to have Morgan joining us in the fall. We welcome her enthusiasm, positive attitude and potential to learn and grow as a Lady Knight.”
Notes- Four-year member of the Minnetonka High School varsity swimming and diving team … Section 6AA Diving Champion … made two appearances at the state championships … placed seventh her junior year and sixth her senior year in the 1-meter dive … holds the Minnetonka pool and school record … two-time all-conference and all-state diver … named team’s most valuable player … intends to major in biology … has two siblings; Alex and David … brother, David, plays collegiate baseball for Itasca Community College … daughter of Kerry and Mark Engel.
Coach Spiniello on Lee- “Thomasin is an outstanding swimmer and will be a great addition to our team. We are excited to have her join our distance program, and also help in the butterfly events.”
Notes- Varsity letterwinner throughout scholastic career from seventh to 12th grade … received all-conference and all-state distinction through grades eighth to 12 … received the Top-8 MHSL State Medal from eighth to 12th grade … captured the MSHL State 500 freestyle title her junior year … finished second in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle at the MHSL State Championships her senior year … nominated for the MHSL State “Swimmer of the Year” award her junior and senior year … received the National Academic Award for Athletes all four years of high school … holds various school and sectional records … named most valuable swimmer 10th, 11th and 12th grade … graduating with highest academic honors … intends to major in psychology and kinesiology … has one sibling, Brogan, who is also a member of the Rutgers swimming and diving team … daughter of Laura and Brett Lee.
Coach Spiniello on Rymer- “Karli is a New Jersey native and we are thrilled to have her join our team. She is very strong in the sprint freestyle and butterfly, which will help us tremendously next season.”
Notes- Four-year member of the Red Bank Catholic varsity swimming and diving team … RBC captured the Monmouth County and conference championship titles all four years of her high school career, highlighted by a 14-1 record during the 2014 season … named First Team All-Shore in 2012, 2013 and 2014 … holds the Red Bank Catholic 100 butterfly record, and was also a member of the record-breaking 200 medley, 200 free and 400 free relay teams ... recipient of the academic excellence award … named to the honor roll … intends to major in biochemistry … has one sibling, Tori … daughter of Susan and Kyle Rymer.
