BLACKSBURG, VA. (March 12, 2014) – Senior diver Nicole Scott (Toronto, Canada) of the Rutgers swimming and diving team earned a second-place finish in the platform event at the 2014 Zone Championships to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships. The championships took place from Monday, March 9 through today.

“Nicole did a fantastic job today,” said head diving coach Fred Woodruff. “I think it was a little tougher this time because she already made it last year so there was some pressure, but she handled it great, kept her composure and did a fantastic job. I am very happy for her.”

Scott, who advanced to the finals of all three diving events at the championships, earned her second-straight silver medal in the platform, totaling 524.80 points in the finals. Scott received a score of 264.35 in the preliminaries to advance to the finals.

Last season, the RU diving captain also claimed a silver medal in the platform to advance to NCAAs.

In the first day of competition, Scott advanced to the finals of the 1-meter after recording a score of 232.20 in the prelims for a total mark of 475.00 overall – good for 11th place. In the 3-meter dive on Tuesday, Scott posted a mark of 295.10 in the prelims and finished off with a score of 541.60 to place 10th overall.

Also competing for RU over the three days was freshman Rebecca Gross (Manchester, Pa.). Gross advanced to the finals of the platform after posting a 186.25 in the prelims and finished with a score of 370.55 to claim ninth overall.

Scott will join sophomore Joanna Wu (Kent, Wash.) and represent Rutgers at the 2014 NCAA Division I Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships, which will take place from March 20-22 at the Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis.
