Sophomore Joanna Wu captures three top-10 finishes

    EVANSTON, Ill. (January 11, 2014) – Facing off against two of the top teams in the nation, the Rutgers swimming and diving team was swept by No 24 Michigan, No. 25 Notre Dame and Northwestern by scores of 219.00-81.00, 206.00-94.00 and 198.50-101.50, respectively on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Joanna Wu (Kent, Wash.) led the Scarlet Knights with three top-10 finishes, highlighted by a win in the 200 yard backstroke.  

    Wu would touch the wall first in the 200 back in a time of 1:58.89 and added a third-place finish in the 100 yard backstroke (55.66) and a seventh-place finish in the 500 free (5:01.95).

    Senior Mary Moser (Wyomissing, Pa.) also posted three top-10 finishes on the day, including third in the 100 yard butterfly (56.38), seventh in the 50 free (24.11) and 10th in the 200 yard free (1:54.80).  

    Junior Greta Leberfinger (Chatham, N.J.) was the final Scarlet Knight to finish in the top three in a swimming event, claiming third in the 100 yard breaststroke at 1:04.56. Leberfinger also notched a sixth-place finish in the 200 breast (2:20.47) and a ninth-place finish in the 400 yard I.M. (4:33.85).

    Sophomore Morgan Pfaff (Red Lion, Pa.) also had a solid day for Rutgers, finishing sixth in the 200 backstroke (2:02.50), eighth in the 400 yard I.M. (4:32.08) and ninth in the 100 back (57.88).

    The 200 yard medley relay team of Wu, Leberfinger, senior Brittany Guinee (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) and Moser finished in 1:46.00, good for sixth-place. In the other relay event of the day, the 400 yard freestyle relay, the team of freshman Rachel Stoddard (Hillsborough, N.J.), sophomore Sarah Coyne (Osceola, Ind.), freshman Meghan Kiely (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) and sophomore Julia Kudryashova (New Providence, N.J.) recorded a time of 3:32.92 to finish eighth.

    On the boards, senior Nicole Scott (Toronto, Canada) would secure third in the 1-meter dive with a score of 247.90 and fourth in the 3-meter dive, totaling 262.15 points.

    Additional notable performances were turned in by Guinee, senior Allyson Perrotti (Branford, Conn.) and junior Brogan Lee (Lindstrom, Minn.). Guinee finished sixth in 200 yard butterfly (2:03.98) and seventh in the 100 fly (57.59), while Perrotti claimed sixth in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:05.55) and Lee captured eighth in the 1000 yard freestyle (10:33.04).

    Rutgers returns to the confines of the Sonny Werblin Recreation Center on Jan. 25, as the Scarlet Knights host local Fordham, Rider and Yale at 10:30 a.m.
