RU Women First, Men Fourth, After First Day of BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships

  • EAST MEADOW, NY – The Rutgers men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams enjoyed a strong opening day at the 2004 BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday at the Nassau County Aquatics Center. The women lead, holding a five-point lead over second-place and seven-time defending champion Notre Dame. The men sit in fourth place with 152 points, 82 points back of first-place Pittsburgh. The women posted three new school records on the day, while the men captured a new high mark in the three-meter diving competition.

    The women’s 400-yard medley relay team of Kelly Harrigan (Bristol, CT), Katie Kuczmarkski (Wilmington, DE), Allie Dean (Buffalo, NY) and Casmera Wick (Longmont, CO) placed first with a school-record time of 3:42.17, to give them 40 team points. The mark was also an NCAA B cut time.

    The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Sarah Gault (Chateauguay, Quebec), Ruth Nichols (Raleigh, NC), Kelly Roche (Redding, CA) and Wick broke the school record with an NCAA B cut time 1:33.01 to place second in the event.

    Dean swam the 200-yard individual medley in a new school record time of 2:02.56, to capture third place. Harrigan finished second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time a time of 4:50.48, to earn 17 points for RU. Both performances are NCAA B cut times.

    Wick’s third place finish in the 50-yard freestyle in 23.55 was also an NCAA cut time.

    On the men’s side, senior Jared Bench (West Babylon, NY) continued to impress in his first season with the Scarlet Knights. He eclipsed the school record with a score of 501.65 in the three-meter dive competition to place second in the event and garner 17 points for Rutgers.

    The 400-yard medley relay team of Josh Van Norman (San Diego, CA), Ivan Morse (Pleasanton, CA), Nathan Ilnicki (Crescent, PA) and Matt Campbell (Haddonfield, NJ) took third place honors with a time of 3:19.49, giving them 32 team points.

    Campbell also placed fourth in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing the race in 20.27.

    The 2004 BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships will resume tomorrow at 10:30 am at the Nassau County Aquatics Center in East Meadow, N.Y.
