RU Swimming & Diving Concludes Sonny Werblin Invite
Several Scarlet Knights post top-five finishes in multiple events

  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. (October 19, 2013) – The Rutgers swimming and diving team concluded the Sonny Werblin Invitational Saturday afternoon at the Rutgers Aquatic Center. The Scarlet Knights posted multiple top-five finishes throughout the day to close out the season-opening invitational.

    “This weekend was a great way to start our season,” said head coach Phil Spiniello. “I was happy with our swims and dives based on where we are in our training. This team is focused and determined, which is exciting to see as a coach.”

    Rutgers would perform exceptionally well across the board, placing various finishers in the top five of several events. RU posted the top three times in the 200 breaststroke, as junior Greta Leberfinger (Chatham, N.J.) recorded the best mark in the event with a time of 2:22.91and freshman Rachel Stoddard (Hillsborough, N.J.) and sophomore Morgan Pfaff (Red Lion, Pa.) finished in 2:25.66 and 2:25.86, respectively.

    That wouldn’t be the only event of the day RU dominated in, as the Scarlet Knights posted the top five times in the 400 yard I.M. Pfaff finished first at 4:28.73, followed by sophomore Joanna Wu (Kent, Wash.) with a time of 4:28.97. Leberfinger would claim third, while Stoddard and Guinee rounded out the Rutgers finishers. Stoddard recorded her best finish of the day in the 100 breast, coming in first at 1:07.29.

    Senior Brittany Guinee (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) also claimed a number-one finish in the 200 butterfly, touching the wall at 2:07.88, while teammate Mary Moser (Wyomissing, Pa.) posted the second-best time in the event at 2:08.96.

    Moser added a first-place finish in the 100 yard butterfly with a mark of 57.72. Senior Allyson Perrotti (Branford, Conn.) also fared well in the event, coming in third at 1:00.17.

    In the 200 yard free, Pfaff led RU with a time of 1:58.49, which was good for second. Guinee would come third, while Leberfinger and Perrotti finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

    Rutgers also performed well in the relay events. In the 200 yard freestyle relay, the Scarlet Knights claimed the top two spots. Lindsay Gisbon-Brokop (Edmonton, AB, Canada), Guinee, Moser and Sophie Newton (Leesburg, Va.) combined to finish in 1:40.76 and Leberfinger, Julia Kudryashova (New Providence, N.J.), Sarah Coyne (Osceola, Ind.) and Meghan Kiely (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) posted a time of 1:41.76.

    Additionally, in both the 200 yard medley relay and the 400 yard freestyle relay, Rutgers was able to finish two-three. The foursome of Wu, Stoddard, Kara Millaci (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) and Kiely came in second in the medley relay with a time of 1:51.78, while Pfaff, Leberfinger, Chantal Asselin (Winnipeg, MB, Canada) and Kudryashova finished just behind at 1:52.26. Later on in the afternoon, Gibson-Brokop, Kiely, Moser and Stoddard would record a time of 3:39.77 in the 400 freestyle relay to come in second and the team of Coyne, Newton, Pfaff and Wu followed in third at 3:43.08.

    Wu rounded out her day with a first-place finish in the 100 back (58.12) and a third-place finish in the 200 back (2:08.57).

    Other top-five finishes were secured by: senior Chelsea Rolin (Saint-Lazare, QC, Canada) who came third in the 100 yard free (54.77), junior Caroline Carlisle (Holly Springs, N.C.) who finished third in the 1650 free (17:53.76) and Gibson-Brokop who came in fifth in the 100 back (1:02.91).

    In the 1-meter diving event, senior Nicole Scott (Toronto, Canada)  finished first with a score of 286.05 while first-year Scarlet Knights Rebecca Gross (Manchester, Pa.) posted a mark of 253.60, which was good for second. Alyssa Black (Middletown, N.Y.) rounded out the participants for RU in the event with a score of 188.05 to put her at sixth.
