  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. (July 30, 2013) – Rutgers swimming and diving head coach Phil Spiniello has announced the 2013-14 schedule. The Scarlet Knights will host four straight events at the Sonny Werblin Recreation Center (five including the Alumni Meet) to open the slate, before hitting the road for the first time in December.

“We are extremely excited for the season ahead,” commented Spiniello. “This year’s schedule will be challenging every step of the way and will help us prepare for our focus of performing well at the championship meets in February and March.”

Last year, Rutgers finished the regular season with a 9-2 overall record and a 2-1 mark in league action. The Scarlet Knights would finish fifth at the BIG EAST Championships.

Rutgers will compete in the American Athletic Conference this year, in the league’s inaugural season. Additional members of the conference are Cincinnati, Connecticut, Houston, Louisville and Southern Methodist.

The season officially begins in mid-September, with the annual Sonny Werblin Invite hosted by the Scarlet Knights. The two-day meet will take place on October 18th and 19th at the Sonny Werblin Recreation Center on the Busch Campus. Among the teams competing are South Connecticut, Central Connecticut State and Pace.  Last year, RU earned 15 first-place finishes and took the top spot in all four relay events at the invite.

RU then hosts Wagner for its first dual meet of the year less than a week later at 4pm (10/25).

The Scarlet Knights will hold its yearly Alumni Meet on October 26th, before continuing regular season competition to open the month of November.  Spiniello will lead his team in a quad match against former BIG EAST conference foes Villanova, Georgetown and Seton Hall on November 8th and 9th at the RU Aquatic Center.

The Frank Elm Invite marks the final home event during the stretch for Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights welcome Villanova, Westchester, Drexel, Saint Peter’s, Army and Columbia to Piscataway beginning November 22nd for the three-day invitational. Rutgers captured a second place finish in last year’s meet, highlighted by a school record setting performance by rising senior diver Nicole Scott in the platform event.

Rutgers begins the road portion of its schedule on December 7th, facing off against Boston University in the first of four straight contests away from the RU Aquatic Center. The Scarlet Knights face off against Patriot League school, Bucknell, in Lewisburg, Pa., on January 4th to open 2014, before taking their longest road trip of the regular season six days later.

Spiniello and squad will travel to the mid-west in a preview of next year’s Big Ten competition, as they take on Illinois, Northwestern and Michigan. The Scarlet Knights battle the Fighting Illini in a dual-match on January 10th, before participating in a quad-match the following day against Northwestern, Michigan and Atlantic Coast Conference member, Notre Dame.

“The Illinois trip will provide us with some tough competition mid season”, commented Spiniello. “It will also give us the opportunity to go up against Big Ten schools in preparation for the transition next season.”

Rutgers returns home for its final two events of the regular season on January 25th and February 8th. RU welcomes Fordham, Rider and Yale for a quad-match to close out January and then concludes the slate against Georgetown and Providence on Senior Day.

The 2014 American Championships will take place in Louisville, Ky., from February 19-22. The Zone Diving Championships begin on March 10th in Blacksburg, Va., while the NCAA Championships will take place on March 20th through the 22nd in Minneapolis, Minn.
