  • STATE COLLEGE, PA - The Rutgers men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams fell short in their bids to end the dual-meet season undefeated as both teams lost to Penn State on Saturday, Jan. 31. The Scarlet Knight women (8-1, 5-0 BIG EAST) lost 166-76 to the No. 13 Nittany Lion women, while the men (7-1, 4-0 BIG EAST) were defeated 130-113.

    Senior Matt Campbell (Haddonfield, NJ) had an outstanding day as he continued to remain undefeated in the 50 free this season, registering a 20.35 to win the event. He also took first in the 100 free (44.75). Sophomore Jamie Miller (Hamburg, NY) came from behind to win the 1000 free (9:34.73), while sophomore Tyler Clark (Granada Hills, CA) was victorious in the 200 fly (1:50.86).

    The Scarlet Knights were able to take one relay as the team of senior Bobby Binz (Woodbury, NJ), junior Ivan Morse (Pleasanton, CA) and sophomores Ryan Campbell (Haddonfield, NJ) and Derek Kwok (Sayreville, NJ) won the 400 free relay (3:06.10). In diving, senior Jared Bench (West Babylon, NY) took first in the one-meter event (324.53).

    Sophomore All-American Kelly Harrigan (Bristol, CT) continued her impressive season with wins in the 200 free (1:50.46) and 200 back (2:00.85). Senior Casmera Wick (Longmont, CO) took the 100 free (52.11) and senior diver Kelly Gerhardstein (Sandusky, OH) had a solid second-place finish in the three-meter dive (270.83).

    Rutgers will now begin preparation for the BIG EAST Championships, which will take place in Long Island, NY, Feb. 19-21.
