Rutgers Swimming and Diving Announces Additions to 2013 Roster

  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. (May 13, 2013) – Rutgers swimming and diving head coach Phil Spiniello and head diving coach Fred Woodruff announce the addition of five swimmers and two divers to the Scarlet Knights roster.  Alyssa Black (Middletown, N.Y.), Becca Gross (Manchester, Pa.) Chantal Asselin (Winnipeg, MB, Canada) Barbara Brottman (Deerfield, Ill.) Rachel Stoddard (Hillsborough, N.J.), Julia Kudryashova (New Providence, N.J.) and Meghan Kiely (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) will join the Scarlet Knights for the 2013 season.

    Alyssa Black

    Level 10 gymnast … First-year member of the Viking Diving Club Team under head coach Jim Frisbie … Named to the Pine Bush High School High Honor Roll and member of the National Honor Society … Plans to major in Chemical Engineering … Daughter of Cara and David Black … Born August 17, 1995.

    “Alyssa, a level 10 gymnast from Middletown, NY, is new to diving, but is already making great strides training with the Vikings Diving Club in Newburgh, NY.    We are excited to have such a talented athlete on our team and we look forward to seeing her progress with her diving in the years ahead.”

    Rebecca Gross

    Four-year member of the Northeastern High School diving team … Finished first at Districts her senior year and 10th at States … Took the top spot at the county championships in 2012, second at districts, and sixth at states … Finished first in the county, third at Districts, and third at States in 2011 … York County All-Time record holder … High school record holder … Dives for the Soaring Eagles Dive Club in East Berlin, Pa., under Brad Butcher … Finished sixth in the 3- meter and 11th in the 1-meter at the USA Diving Regionals … Member of the Northeastern HS honor roll and National Honor Society … Plans to major in Engineering … Daughter of Scott and Dayna Gross … has one sister, Emily … Born February 7, 1995.

    “Rebecca Gross, an All-State diver from Manchester, Pa., will provide good depth in all three diving events as a freshman.  Being a former Level 9 gymnast she brings an excellent work ethic that will certainly pay dividends in her collegiate career.”

    Barbra Brottman:

    Four-year member of the Deerfield High School Varsity swim team … Named captain and MVP of the squad her during her senior campaign … Named to the All-Conference team and qualified for the state championships each of her four years … Set team records in the 200 free and 200 & 400 free relay … Top-10 school record holder in 200 free, 500 free, 200 IM and 100 fly … Placed 9th (2012) and 8th (2011) at State in the 200 free and 10th (2012) in the 500 free … named to the 2011 and 2012 All-State team … Plans to major in Pre-Vet … Daughter of Mark and Bev Brottman … has identical twin sisters Jamie and Jorie … Born April 3, 1995.

    “Barbra swims Freestyle and IM, she will be a nice addition to our tradition of 400 IMers here at Rutgers.  She is a hard working athlete with a positive approach to her training. We look forward to seeing her progress as a collegiate athlete over her four years here at Rutgers.”

    Meghan Kiely

    Four-year member of Mountain Lakes High School swim team … Earned USA Swimming Scholastic All-America honors … Holds records at Mountain Lakes in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 400 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay … Swam for ten years under head coach Keira Cruz at Lakeland Hills YMCA … Five-year YMCA Nationals Qualifier … Member of the National Honor Society and Spanish National Honors Society … Plans to major in biology … Daughter of Mandy and Jay Kiely … Has two sisters: Erin and Katie … Born January 24, 1995.

    “Meghan has the potential to do great things in our program. She is an up and coming swimmer with her best swimming ahead of her as a Scarlet Knight.  She is a native of New Jersey and has a lot of Rutgers spirit. She is talented swimmer and going to be a great addition to our program.”

    Rachel Stoddard

    Four-year member and captain of the Hillsborough High School Varsity swim team … Two-time Athlete of the Month at Hillsborough … Recipient of the Paul Robeson Youth Achievement Award … Garnered All-American times in the three relay events … Named All-Skyland Conference First Team … Earned a spot on the USA Swimming Scholastic All-America squad … Swam for Somerset Valley YMCA in Sommerville, N.J., for 11 years under head coach Matt Donovan … National Champion in the 50 breast … Plans to major in Special Education … Daughter of Ellen and Sean Stoddard … Has four siblings: Elizabeth, David, Deborah and Daniel … Born January 10, 1995.

    “Rachel is from right here in New Jersey, and we are happy she decided to stay in New Jersey for her collegiate swimming career.  She is a very accomplished swimmer, a YMCA National Champion in breaststroke and will come in and make an immediate impact on our team.”

    Chantal Asselin

    Five- year member of Manta Swim Club in Winnepeg, Manitoba under head coach Tom Hainey … 2009 Canadian Games team member … Attended College Sturgeon Heights Collegiate School in Winnepeg, Manitoba … Plans to major in cell biology and neuroscience … Daughter of Michele Rousseau and Rick Asselin … Has one sister Janelle … Born August 13, 1995.

    “Chantal is a Canadian Olympic Trials Qualifier in freestyle.  She has a strong desire to continue improving in her college career and is going to be a great fit for our team in both athletically and academically”

    Julia Kudryashova:

    Four-year member of New Providence High School swim team … Broke the Union County record in the 50 and 100 freestyle events as a junior and a senior … Holds records in the 50, 100, and 200 freestyle events at New Providence … Swam under head coach Peter Barry for three years at Somerset Hills YMCA in Basking Ridge, N.J. … YMCA Short Course Nationals finalist in the 50 and 100 freestyle … Plans to major in Communication … Daughter of Irina Kudryashova and Rinat Shaymukhametov … Has one sister Sophia … Born May 6, 1993.

    “We are excited that Julia is transferring back to New Jersey.  She is a very talented sprinter and will be a nice addition to our team next year we look forward to her days as a Scarlet Knight”
