Rutgers Swimming and Diving Finishes BIG EAST Championships in Eighth

    PITTSBURGH, Pa. (February 18, 2012) – The Rutgers swimming and diving team wrapped up the BIG EAST Championships at Trees Pool in Pittsburgh on Saturday, with a total of 247.5 points for an eighth place finish.

    Louisville picked up the victory (758.5), followed by Notre Dame (593.5) in second and West Virginia (524) in third. Host Pittsburgh collected 375.5 points for fourth, while Villanova came in fifth (368.5) and Connecticut in sixth (350). Cincinnati slipped past the Scarlet Knights by seven points for the seventh place finish (254.5). Georgetown (86), Seton Hall (82) and Providence (73) rounded out the 11 team field. 

    On day four of the swim portion, Chelsea Rolin (Saint-Lazare, QC, Canada) and Michelle Berman (LaMirada, Calif.) each finished inside the top-20 in the 1,650 freestyle, coming in 12th and 16th, respectively. Rolin swam the event in 16:54.93, while Berman clocked in at 17:10.59.

    RU also placed two in the top-15 in the 200 butterfly. Brittany Guinee (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) finished in 2:02.78 for 12th place, followed by Holly Gallagher from Connecticut (2:03.03) in 12th and RU’s Jaquelyn Ward (Berlin, N.J.) in 13th (2:03.08). 

    Brianne Lindblad (Kent, Wash.) placed 11th in the 200 backstroke, with a time of 2:00.58, slimming one second off of her preliminary time.

    Trisha Averill (Renton, Wash.) touched the wall at 2:16.20 in the 200 breaststroke, coming in 13th. 

    In the final event of the championships, the 400 freestyle, Rutgers team of Taylor Curado (Highlands, Colo.), Rolin, Mary Moser (Wyomissing, Pa.), and Ward, came in eighth (3:25.69), barely getting edged by Connecticut, who touched the wall 3:25.37.

    Four of RU’s divers – Valentina Gordon (Metuchen, N.J.), Nicole Honey (New Hyde Park, N.Y.), Katie Kearney (Mahwah, N.J.) and Nicole Scott (Toronto, ON, Canada) – will compete in the Zone Diving Championships, March 9-11.
