Rutgers Swimming and Diving Enter Final Day of BIG EAST Championships in Seventh

  • PITTSBURGH, Pa. (February 17, 2012) – The Rutgers’ swimmers Jacquelyn Ward (Berlin, N.J.) and Taylor Zafir (Wheaton, Ill.) each placed in the top-eight in the 400 individual medley on day three of the BIG EAST Championships at Trees Pool in Pittsburgh. The two helped to add 24 points to the Scarlet Knights running total which stands at 201.5 (seventh place) with one day of competition remaining.

    Zafir, a junior, clocked in at 4:20.99 – slimming seven seconds off her seed time – to finish fourth in the prelims, while Ward, a senior, touched the wall at (4:21.56) and placed seventh. In the finals it was Ward that came in sixth place swimming the 400 in 4:22.81. Zafir snagged eighth, touching at 4:24.99.

    Junior Taylor Curado (Highlands, Colo.) earned the Scarlet Knights five points in the 100 butterfly, finishing in 12th (55.79) in the consolation finals, after touching 11th in the preliminaries.

    Senior Trisha Averill (Renton, Wash.) chipped in 3.5 points, tying for 13th in the 100 breaststroke, touching at the same time as Notre Dame’s Lauren Stauder, 1:03.32.

    Senior Brianee Lindblad (Kent, Wash.) touched in at ninth in the 100 backstroke, logging a time of 55.84.

    RU finished the night with the 200 medley relay, swam by Lindblad, Averill, Curado and Ward. The Scarlet Knights took an eighth place finish, for 22 points.          

    The championships conclude on Saturday with the 1,650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly and the 400 freestyle relay scheduled for 10 a.m. preliminaries and 6 p.m. finals. Following the day’s events there will be a senior recognition ceremony.
