PITTSBURGH, Pa. (February 16, 2012) – The Rutgers swimming and diving dropped to sixth place with 138 points through two days of action of the swimming portion of the BIG EAST Championships at Trees Pool on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh.
Sophomore Chelsea Rolin (Saint-Lazare, QC, Canada) and senior Michelle Berman (LaMirada, Calif.) each trimmed time off of their seed times in preliminaries of the 500 yard freestyle. Rolin – whose seed time was 4:58.84 – touched the wall at 4:56.54, while Berman knocked off nearly six seconds from her seed time (5:05.58), clocking in at 4:59.60.
Seniors Jacquelyn Ward (Berlin, N.J.) and Trisha Averill (Renton, Wash.) finished in the top-15 of the 200 individual medley. Ward came in 12th with a time of 2:03.41, followed by Averill in 13th (2:03.51).
Sophomore Mary Moser (Wyomissing, Pa.) swam the 50 freestyle in 23.67 in the preliminaries, improving on her seed time of 24.09.
The Scarlet Knights’ 200 freestyle relay team of junior Taylor Cuardo (Highlands, Colo.), Moser, Rolin and senior Brianne Lindblad (Kent, Wash.) earned RU 24 points with a seventh place finish, clocking in at 1:34.00.
The championships continue on Friday with the 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and 400 medley relay. Preliminaries begin at 10 a.m., followed by the finals at 6 p.m.
