PITTSBURGH (February 15, 2012) – The Rutgers swimming and diving team sits in fourth place after day one of the swim portion of the BIG EAST Championships at Trees Pool in Pittsburgh. The Scarlet Knight swimmers tallied 77 points in Wednesday’s two events.
RU opened day one by trimming over three seconds off of its seed time (7:30.92) in the 800 freestyle relay, swam by Jacquelyn Ward (Berlin, N.J.), Chelsea Rolin (Saint-Lazare, QC, Canada), Mary Moser (Wyomissing, Pa.) and Emily Kaufman (Bothell, Wash.). The Scarlet Knights finished in eighth place, touching the wall at 7:27.73 and earning the team 22 points.
In the second and final event of the night, RU tied for sixth with Villanova in the 200 medley relay. Brianne Lindblad (Kent, Wash.), Trisha Averill (Renton, Wash.), Taylor Curado (Highlands, Colo.) and Moser improved on their seed time of 1:45.12 by clocking in at 1:42.82, adding 25 points to the team’s total.
Following the diving championships and day one of the swim portion, Rutgers has combined for 101 points – seven points behind third place Connecticut (108). Louisville holds the lead with 144 points, while Notre Dame stands in second with 135.
The championships continue on Thursday with the 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle and the 200 freestyle relay. Preliminaries begin at 10 a.m., followed by the finals at 6 p.m.
