  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. (February 14, 2012) – Rutgers swimming will travel to Pittsburgh to compete in the BIG EAST Championships, set to take place Feb. 15-18 at Trees Pool. The Scarlet Knights finished the regular season with their best overall record since the 2000-01 season at 11-2, including a perfect 4-0 record in conference action. RU looks to work off its diver’s efforts which placed them third in the BIG EAST Diving Championships over the weekend.

“The momentum provided by the divers has the team excited, focus and ready to put the past five months of hard training to work,” head coach Phil Spiniello said. “Our goal is to swim to our potential and let the score take care of itself.”

RU capped off its regular season with a pair of victories against Fordham, 180-120, and Rider, 221-74, on Saturday, Jan. 28. The Scarlet Knights took first in 10 events in the tri-meet, with Jacquelyn Ward (Berlin, N.J.), Trisha Averill (Renton, Wash.) and Chelsea Rolin (Saint-Lazare, QC, Canada) each picking up gold in two individual events.

The Championships open on Wednesday at 6 p.m. with the 800 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay on the schedule. Thursday’s preliminaries for the 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle and 200 freestyle relay will begin at 10 a.m., followed by the finals at 6 p.m.

Friday’s events are the 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and 400 medley relay, beginning at 10 a.m. and finals set for 6 p.m.

Saturday is the final day of the event, with the 1,650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly and the 400 freestyle relay scheduled for 10 a.m. prelims and 6 p.m. finals. Following the day’s events there will be a senior recognition ceremony.
