Scarlet Knights improve to 7-0 on the season with dominating win over Bison

  • LEWISBURG, Pa. (January 15, 2012) – Rutgers swimming and diving returned to the pool, kicking off the second half of the season with a 155-83 win over Bucknell at Kinney Natatorium on Sunday, Jan. 15 in Lewisburg, Pa.

    The Scarlet Knights remain unbeaten with the victory and improve to 7-0 on the season. Rutgers touched the wall first in 10 of the 11 races and swept both the one and three meter diving events.

    “I am happy with the results from today’s meet,” said head coach Phil Spiniello. “It was a good way to open up the second half of the season.”

    Rutgers started off the meet going 1-2 in the 200-yard medley relay as Brianne Lindblad (Kent, Wash.), Trisha Averill (Renton, Wash.), Taylor Curado (Highlands, Colo.) and Mary Moser (Wyomissing, Pa.) posted a time of 1:46.40. In second place was Courtney Sepich (Ocean City, N.J.), Allyson Perrotti (Branford, Conn.), Brittany Guinee (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) and Melanie Gaffey (Bohemia, N.Y.).

    The Scarlet Knights were dominant in the short distance freestyle events, highlighted by Moser who took the top spot in the 100 and 200 freestyle. Moser finished in 52.47 to win the 100-yard free and went 1:53.70 in the 200-yard free. Emilie Kaufman (Bothell, Wash.) was third in both events, going 53.67 and 1:56.84, respectively.

    Rutgers also placed in the top four spots of the 50 free, led by Curado in 24.35, followed by Linblad in second (24.63), Gaffey in third (25.22) and Sepich in 25.29. In the 400 IM, the Scarlet Knights finished 1-2-3 as Jacquelyn Ward (Berlin, N.J.) won the event in 4:24.56, while Averill took second in 4:26.39 and Taylor Zafir (Wheaton, Ill.) placed third in 4:27.17.

    Ward was also victorious in the 200-yard butterfly, finishing in a time of 2:05.38. Guinee took second, clocking a time of 2:06.48. Guinee claimed a second-place showing in the 500-yard freestyle (5:14.50), an even won by Chelsea Rolin (Saint-Lazare, QC, Canada) who touched the wall in 5:06.08 to give Rutgers another event win.

    The Scarlet Knights also had a strong showing in the 200 backstroke, earning points with finishes in the top four. Lindblad picked up an individual win with a time of 2:05.42, followed by Megan Caylor (Kenmore, Wash.) in second (2:06.97), Lindsay Gibson-Brokop (Edmonton, AB, Canada) in third (2:08.48) and Sepich in fourth (2:08.51).

    Nicole Scott (Toronto, Canada) won both diving events, collecting 283.15 points in the one-meter and 290.60 in the three-meter.

    Rutgers will travel to Harrisonburg, Va. to face James Madison in a dual meet on Friday, Jan. 20, at 2 p.m.
