  • PISCATAWAY, NJ - The Rutgers men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams each defeated West Virginia in dominant fashion in the first BIG EAST action of the season for both teams. The men won 140-98, while the women topped the Mountaineers 142-91.

    For the men, senior Matt Campbell (Haddonfield, NJ), junior Josh Van Norman (San Diego, CA) and sophomore Tyler Clark (Granada Hills, CA) were all double winners. Campbell took the 50 (20.78) and 100 freestyle (45.94), while Van Norman won the 200 backstroke (1:54.05) and swam leadoff on the victorious 400 medley relay (3:25.90). Clark was also a part of the relay and won the 200 fly (1:53.20) in a BIG EAST A qualifying time. Jonathan Hupp (Mobile, AL) and sophomore Jamie Miller (Hamburg, NY) took first (4:06.10) and third (4:07.29) in the 400 IM, both earning BIG EAST A qualifying times.

    The women had several strong performances as well. Sophomore Kelly Harrigan (Bristol, CT) was a triple-winner, taking first in the 400 IM (4:29.07) and the 200 fly (2:03.51), while swimming on the first-place 400 medley relay (3:59.10). Junior Kelly Roche (Redding, CA) and freshman Allyson Parent (Glen Falls, NY) both achieved BIG EAST A qualifying times in victory, with Roche winning the 200 free (1:53.03) and Parent taking the 200 back (2:06.08). Freshman Sarah Gault (Chateauguay, Quebec) was a double-winner as she won the 50 (24:39) and 100 free (52.91), while qualifying for the BIG EAST Championship in both events.

    In diving, senior Jared Bench (West Babylon, NY) won both the one (289.35) and three-meter (294.60) events for the men. On the women’s side, freshman Sharon Fish (Northbrook, IL) began her career by winning the one-meter (245.47) and qualifying for the BIG EAST Championship. Senior Kelly Gerhardstein (Sandusky, OH) took first on the three-meter board (253.80).

    The men and women will continue BIG EAST competition when they travel to Storrs, CT, for a duel meet against UConn on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 1:00 p.m. RESULTS
