PISCATAWAY, NJ - The Rutgers swimming and diving team completed its first meet of the year as the Sonny Werblin Invitational drew to a close on Saturday, Oct. 25.
Sophomore Kelly Harrigan (Bristol, CT) continued the domination she displayed during her All-American freshman campaign, winning four individual events while contributing to five relay victories. She won the 500 free with a Big East A qualifying time (4:58.32), while senior Liz Carter (West Covina, CA) made a Big East B qualifying time with her sixth-place finish (5:06.89) in the same event. Freshman Sarah Gault (Chateauguay, Quebec) and junior Kelly Roche (Redding, CA) finished second (24.34) and third (24.53), respectively, in the 50 freestyle to earn Big East A qualifying times.
On the men’s side, senior Matt Campbell (Haddonfield, NJ) won the 100 (46.60) and 50 freestyles (20.55), while anchoring the 200 medley relay to victory. His performance in the 50 freestyle earned him a Big East A qualifying time. Junior Josh Van Norman (San Diego, CA) won the 200 backstroke (1:54.72), and senior Nathan Ilnicki (Crescent, PA) took the 100 breaststroke (58.79).
In diving, senior Kelly Gerhardstein (Sandusky, OH) won both the one-meter (231.90) and three-meter (248.90) for the women, while for the men, senior Jared Bench (West Babylon, NY) also took the one-meter (283.30) and three-meter (301.20).
Both the men and women will begin BIG EAST competition when West Virginia arrives at the Sonny Werblin Recreation Center for a meet on Saturday, Nov. 1.
