Tennis Closes 2017 with Home Matches against Wisconsin, Minnesota

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers tennis closes out its 2017 spring season when it hosts Wisconsin on Friday at noon and Minnesota on Sunday at 11 a.m. Both matches will be contested at the RU Tennis Center, with the East Brunswick Racquet Club serving as the indoor venue in case of inclement weather.

Sunday’s match against the Golden Gophers is senior day, as Farris Cunningham and Ksenija Tihomirova will be honored prior to the match. The first 50 students who attend either contest will receive a free t-shirt and complimentary pizza courtesy of the program.

Last Time Out
After the Scarlet Knights picked up a midweek win over Stony Brook, RU fell to then-No. 44 Maryland, 6-1, last Saturday in College Park. Cunningham added her fifth Big Ten victory in her last six outings after she defeated Cassandre Thebault, 6-2, 6-3.

Freshman Jacqueline Cochrane suffered a hard-fought loss in No. 5 singles to Katsiaryna Yemelyanenka. After dropping her first set, 7-6 (4), Cochrane also lost her second second, 7-5, in the tough defeat.

In doubles play, Alexandra Stanova and Kristina Hovsepyan defeated junior Mingxiu Du and freshman Katherine Muzik, 6-1. Ekaterina Tour amd Caroline Williams defeated junior Chloe Lee and Tihomirova, 6-1, to secure the doubles point.

Catching Up with the Scarlet Knights
Through 19 duals, Cunningham leads the program with 10 victories from the No. 6 position. Her five Big Ten wins this season also lead RU. The Houston, Texas, native has won five out of her past six outings, which includes conference victories over Maryland, Michigan, Penn State, Ohio State and Northwestern.

Muzik is second on the team with eight singles wins, while junior Du owns seven victories, including a 3-6 mark in the No. 1 position during Big Ten action.

Cochrane and Cunningham lead RU with a 10-4 doubles record this season, which includes its 6-4 victory over Penn State on April 2 in the No. 2 position. The duo has won three of its last five Big Ten doubles matches, with wins over PSU, Northwestern and Indiana.

Scouting Wisconsin
The Badgers (4-14, 0-9) dropped a pair of home conference matches last weekend, as they lost to Indiana, 6-1, and Purdue, 5-2. Maria Avgerinos had back-to-back singles wins during weekend play to highlight action for Wisconsin.

Competing in the No. 1 position, Avgerinos owns a 6-11 record this spring. Sydney Rider is 4-10 in 2017, while Kelsey Grambeau is 5-11 in singles action.

Two doubles teams have five wins for the Badgers, as Grambeau and Michelle Linden are 5-1 while Rider and Kendall Kirsch are 5-3. In Big Ten Play, Wisconsin has gone 2-16 overall in doubles.

Kelcy McKenna is the head coach of Wisconsin.

Scouting Minnesota
The Golden Gophers (13-10, 5-3) collected two home victories last weekend at the Baseline Tennis Center. Minnesota defeated Purdue, 6-1, before it downed Indiana, 5-2, on senior day.

Three Golden Gophers own 10 or more wins during the dual campaign, as Tine Kreinis has a 13-7 overall record along with six conference victories. Camila Vargas Gomez and Caroline Ryba each have 12 wins, with Ryba’s 12-7 mark coming in the No. 1 position.

Ryba and Cammy Frei are 10-8 in doubles this spring, which includes eight wins from the No. 2 position.

Chuck Merzbacher is the head coach of Minnesota.

Last Meeting
Rutgers closed out the 2016 regular season on the road with losses to Wisconsin (6-1) and Minnesota (5-2). Against the Golden Gophers, Tihomirova helped RU claim a 6-4 win over Ryba and Annemarie Emme, 6-4.
