IOWA CITY, IOWA - Behind solid pitching from senior Shayla Sweeney and freshman Taryn Atlee driving in two RBIs in the seventh, the Rutgers softball team defeated Iowa, 2-0, in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Pearl Field.
The Scarlet Knights (11-29, 2-10 Big Ten) and Hawkeyes (14-24, 7-7 Big Ten) were locked in a pitchers' duel well into the final inning of the contest. In the top of the seventh, Atlee capitalized with the bases loaded, sending an extra base hit to right field to drive in the leading runs. Sweeney then struck out the side in the bottom of the frame to seal the win.
Sweeney registered her third complete-game shutout of the season, allowing only four hits and striking out four batters. Sophomore Nicolette Anico added in a team-high two hits, while also notching a walk and a run in the win.
Allison Doocy tossed her second complete game of the weekend for Iowa. Four different Iowa hitters contributed a hit to the Hawkeyes' tally of four overall.
The pitchers' duel began early in the game, as both teams saw three straight batters retired at the plate in the first.
In the second inning, the Scarlet Knights and Hawkeyes each loaded the bases, but Doocy and Sweeney worked to keep the score locked at 0-0.
As the stalemate continued, the Hawkeyes threatened with two hits in the bottom of the sixth, the most for either team in an inning in the contest. However, Sweeney delivered a strikeout to end the frame for another scoreless inning of work.
RU then loaded the bases in the top of the seventh on walks for Anico and senior Bridget Carr, and an Iowa error. Atlee then sent an extra base hit to the right field wall to send in two runs for a 2-0 Scarlet Knight lead.
Sweeney delivered three consecutive strikeouts in the final frame to close the door on the Hawkeyes.
