UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Rutgers women’s lacrosse fell to No. 9/8 Penn State, 18-7, Saturday afternoon in University Park, Pennsylvania. Paige Paratore and Amanda Turturro each recorded two goals in the Scarlet Knights’ Big Ten Conference opener.
The defeat snapped a three-game winning streak for RU, which had not lost since it dropped a hard-fought, 11-9 setback against then-No. 10 Penn on March 1 at High Point Solutions Stadium. The contest was also the third against a ranked opponent in Rutgers’ last five games
“Obviously, it was not a great day for us,” said head coach Laura Brand-Sias. “Details matter when you’re playing an opponent of Penn State’s caliber and we lost sight of that. We will get on track this week as we prepare for another quality Big Ten opponent."
RU was the first on the board, as senior Kristina Dunphey found the back of the net on an unassisted strike to give the Scarlet Knights an early 1-0 lead at the 24:44 mark in the first half. Penn State responded with a 3-0 scoring run before back-to-back goals from sophomore Abbey Brooks and Paratore made it 3-3 with 11 minutes to go in the period.
PSU closed out the first half on a 9-3 scoring run to take a 12-6 lead into the locker room. From there, the Nittany Lions added six goals in the second half to hold on for the win.
Rutgers returns to action next Friday, when it hosts Ohio State at 7 p.m. at High Point Solutions Stadium. The Scarlet Knights have won their past two meetings with the Buckeyes, which included an 11-10 overtime victory in the first round of the Big Ten Conference Tournament last season.
