PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers men’s track and field junior Christopher Mirabelli competes in the javelin on Wednesday at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
The Lumberton, New Jersey, native makes his third appearance at nationals and attempts to lock up first team All-America status for the first time in his collegiate career at historic Hayward Field. At last year’s outdoor championships, Mirabelli earned honorable mention All-America recognition.
Mirabelli appears in the second flight of the javelin championship, which begins at 8:45 p.m. ET. Mirabelli owns the sixth-best distance in the field at 76.67m (251' 6") this season.
The Scarlet Knight standout secured his spot at nationals with his third-place result of 69.20m (227’ 0”) last week at the East Regional in Lexington, Kentucky. Previously, Mirabelli defended his Big Ten title in the event with his throw of 75.17m (246' 7"). The toss just missed the Big Ten record of 75.23m (246' 10") set by Ohio State's Bill Stanley in 2013.
Mirabelli reset his school record in the javelin this season at the Penn Relays, when he added a toss of 76.67m (251’ 6”) to capture the Scarlet Knights’ first Penn Relay’s individual title since 2013. Mirabelli also captured the Metropolitan Championships crown in April with a throw of 76.20m (250'00").
