WILMINGTON, N.C. – Junior Toks Pedro finished tied for third as Rutgers men’s golf closed out action at the Seahawk Intercollegiate Monday afternoon at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, North Carolina.
The Scarlet Knights concluded the tournament tied for ninth with a 916 (315-300-301). Kent State captured the team title with an 857 (291-281-285), while Army (904: 309-305-290) and Richmond (906: 306-302-298) finished second and third, respectively.
“I’m happy with how the guys competed despite the adverse conditions during the first and third rounds,” head coach Rob Shutte said. “It was a gritty performance from them as they dealt with 20 to 30 mile-an-hour winds at times. We’ll have a few weeks before out next tournament to work on our game.”
Pedro produced a one-over-par 73 to secure his top-three individual scorecard (215: 73-69-73). The Lagos, Nigeria native co-led the field with 14 birdies during the 54-hole tournament and tied for third in par-four-scoring. Pedro had the lowest 18-hole score of any Scarlet Knight with his three-under-par 69 during the second round on Sunday.
“Toks put himself in position to have another chance at winning a tournament,” Shutte said. “He looked extremely comfortable out on the course and it’s only a matter of time before the results break in his favor.”
Matt Holuta contributed the lowest day-two score with an even 72 on Monday, as he finished tied for 20th (227: 80-75-72). The junior paced RU with 31 birdies, tied for sixth overall in the field.
Sophomore Matthew Mourin tied-for-43rd with a 233 (81-71-81). Freshman Tony Jiang (249: 86-86-75) and junior Jack Panagos (249: 81-85-83) also contributed to the team score.
Competing as individuals, freshman Adam Gray placed 58th with a 237 (83-79-75) and sophomore Matthew Walsh finished 76th.
Rutgers has a few weeks off from competition before it competes in the Princeton Invitational from April 8-9.
