PISCATAWAY, N.J. – In front of 13,158 fans, Rutgers football closed out spring practice with its annual Scarlet-White game Saturday evening at High Point Solutions Stadium. The game was televised live on Big Ten Network, as junior quarterback Giovanni Rescigno threw for 193 yards and a touchdown to help the Scarlet secure a 16-13 victory.
The Scarlet-White game was part of Rutgers Athletics’ “Spring Fever”, which featured the women’s lacrosse game against No. 17 Northwestern in the morning followed by a concert from Grammy-nominated artists Big & Rich on the field. Former Rutgers football stars Mohamed Sanu and Duron Harmon served as honorary coaches for the contest.
Junior kicker Gavin Haggerty was a perfect 3-of-3 on field-goal attempts, including a 41-yard conversion to put the Scarlet up, 16-13, with one minute to go. Senior Josh Hicks ran for 72 yards on 18 carries, while senior Damon Mitchell finished with five receptions for 73 yards and a score to lead all receivers. In total, the Scarlet produced 292 yards of offense.
On defense, sophomore Jon Bateky led the Scarlet with two sacks and two tackles-for-loss, while senior defensive back Kiy Hester paced the squad with four tackles. Sophomore Damon Hayes had an interception for the Scarlet. For the White, sophomore Lawrence Stevens had six tackles, while junior Eric Margolis and sophomore Ron’Dell Carter each had five stops. Carter and sophomore redshirt Julius Turner each had a sack for the White squad.
With the White spotted 13 points to start the contest, both teams went scoreless in the first half until Haggerty connected on a 40-yard attempt to make it 13-3 at halftime.
Another Haggerty field goal, this time from 37 yards, gave the Scarlet momentum heading into the final quarter. At the 8:05 mark in the final stanza, Rescigno found Mitchell for a 28-yard touchdown pass, capping a nine-play drive to tie the score at 13. Haggerty’s 41-yard field goal in the closing seconds proved to be the difference for the Scarlet.
