PISCATAWAY, NJ - Rutgers softball offensive standout Crystal Vargas (Jersey City, NJ) has earned a starting spot on the Puerto Rican National team. Vargas, the Scarlet Knights’ starting third baseman, will play right field for Puerto Rico this summer.
The team is currently hosting a pre-Olympic qualifying tournament, with the Cayman Islands, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela and Canada. The winner will proceed to the Pan American Games, August 1-17, in the Dominican Republic.
Puerto Rico split its first two games, losing to the Dominican Republic, 4-0, and defeating the Cayman Islands, 8-0.
Vargas, who tied for the team lead in home runs last season with eight, was second on the team in slugging percentage (.586), runs scored (22), hits (34), runs batted in (24) and total bases (68). She was tied for second in doubles (6) and first in triples (2). Her eight home runs tie her for first in the RU single-season record book.
The Rutgers Softball team finished its 2003 season with a 26-23 overall record, including an 8-12 mark in the BIG EAST.
