  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers softball team (23-18, 5-9 BIG EAST) split a conference doubleheader against Pittsburgh (20-29, 6-12 BIG EAST) April 28 at the RU Softball Complex, winning game one 6-4 before suffering a tough eight-inning 1-0 loss in the nightcap.

In game one, RU jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning, capitalizing on a Nikki Childress (Roanoke, VA) two-run homer, then back-to-back doubles from sophomores Crystal Vargas (Jersey City, NJ) and Jenny Card (Miami, FL).

The Panthers got back two of the runs in the top of the third, but RU tacked on three additional runs in the bottom of the third. Junior Megan Antonucci (Warrington, PA) forced in a run with her fielder’s choice, then scored on a Nikki Cruz (Bremerton, WA) fielder’s choice. Junior Brittney Neer (Tallahassee, FL) knocked in the inning’s final run with her two-out single up the middle.

Trailing 6-2 entering their final at-bat, the Panthers managed to score two runs in the top of the seventh, but the Knights were able to shut down the two-out rally in time to save the victory.

Junior Andria Koehler (Sellersville, PA) threw the complete-game seven hitter, allowing two earned runs (four total) while striking out seven and walking two batters (11-5). Childress had the most productive game at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored, two RBI and the home run.

It was a pitcher’s duel in the nightcap as neither team could muster a run in the first seven innings. In the top of the eighth, Pittsburgh took advantage of two Rutgers fielding errors to the break the scoreless tie.

Junior Brielle Consentino (Carlstadt, NJ) pitched brilliantly for the Knights despite suffering the loss (7-9), scattering two hits while allowing the one unearned run in eight innings, striking out four Panthers while issuing two walks. Antonucci and senior Meaghan Asselta (Ramsey, NJ) accounted for all of RU’s hits with two apiece.

Rutgers will travel to Massachusetts to play a BIG EAST doubleheader Tuesday, April 29, at Boston College. First pitch is at 2:00 p.m.
