  • PISCATAWAY, NJ - Sophomore Crystal Vargas (Jersey City, NJ) and junior Nikki Childress (Roanoke, VA) each had home runs to lead the Scarlet Knights (22-17, 4-8 BIG EAST) to a 10-7 victory in the second game of a doubleheader against Virginia Tech (19-28, 5-11 BIG EAST). The win came after a 5-4 loss in the first game at the RU Softball Complex on Sunday, April 27.

In the first game, the Scarlet Knights let a four-run lead slip away as the Hokies picked up runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings to gain the lead. Senior Melissa Bradford (Pennsville, NJ) hit a shot to left center in the first inning that stopped just inside the fence to send home senior Meaghan Asselta (Ramsey, NJ) for the first run of the day. Bradford and sophomore Jenny Card (Miami, FL) scored when Vargas hit her first home run of the day, and her fifth of the season, in the first inning.

Junior Brielle Cosentino (Carlstadt, NJ) pitched the first 4.1 innings of the game, allowing six hits and two runs and striking out two before she was relieved by senior Andria Koehler (Sellersville, PA). Koehler pitched 2.2 innings, allowing four hits, three runs (two earned) and three walks while striking out two batters in the loss (10-5).

In the second game of the afternoon, it was the Scarlet Knights who battled back to earn the win. Virginia Tech took a 6-0 lead in the fourth inning, but Rutgers scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to three. The Scarlet Knights then had a seven-run fifth inning to take seal the victory. The Hokies got one more run in the seventh, but it wasn’t enough to surmount RU’s lead.

Vargas had her second home run of the day with a solo shot in the fourth inning and Childress collected her seventh home run of the season in the fifth inning with a two-run bomb over the right-field fence. Junior Brittney Neer (Tallahassee, FL) sliced a pitch up the middle for a double in the fifth inning, which sent home three runners. Neer advanced to third on the throw home and then scored on the same play due to a throwing error by the shortstop.

Neer was 2-for-3 in the second game with one run scored and five RBI. Junior Megan Antonucci (Warrington, PA) was 5-for-7 on the day, scoring two runs.

Koehler pitched the first 0.2 inning, allowing three runs on three hits and walking one. Freshman Christina Gillman (Valencia, CA) threw the next 2.1 innings, allowing one run and three hits. Cosentino finished the game for the Scarlet Knights, pitching the last four innings and allowing eight hits and three runs to earn the victory (7-8).

The Scarlet Knights will host Pittsburgh on Monday, April 28, to make up the BIG EAST doubleheader that was rained out on April 26; the first game will begin at 1 p.m.
