Rutgers Splits Doubleheader Against St. Joseph's

  • PISCATAWAY, NJ - The Rutgers softball team (21-16, 3-7 BIG EAST) lost a close game to St. Joseph’s University (20-9, 7-3 Atlantic 10), 5-4, before bouncing back to defeat the Hawks, 13-4.

    The Scarlet Knights’ offense was led by Nikki Childress (Roanoke, VA), who hit a two-run home run in the first game and a three-run home run in the second game. Childress, who has a .469 average and a .790 slugging percentage, went 2-for-3 in the first game and 3-for-3 in the second, earning her fifth and sixth home runs of the season.

    Rutgers scored two runs in the third inning of the first game and held the 2-0 lead until the top of the sixth when the Hawks got on the scoreboard with one run. The Scarlet Knights had two more runs in the sixth, but St. Joseph’s took a 5-4 lead and won the game with four runs scored in the top of the seventh.

    Christina Gillman (Valencia, CA) pitched 6.1 innings for the Scarlet Knights, allowing nine hits, five runs (four earned) and two walks. Gillman struck out three before falling to 4-4. Brielle Cosentino (Carlstadt, NJ) pitched the last 0.2 innings of the game, striking out one of the two batters she faced.

    The Scarlet Knights had an early lead in the second game with four runs in the first inning. St. Joseph’s scored one in the second to make the score 4-1, but Rutgers added six runs in the third. The Hawks’ three-run fourth inning was matched by the Scarlet Knights with three runs of their own, making the final score 13-4.

    Courtney Love (Seabrook, TX) continued her solid offensive efforts, finishing the first game 2-for-3, with one run scored and one RBI. In the second game, Love was 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs. Melissa Bradford (Pennsville, NJ), the designated player, went 2-for-3 in the firsg game and 3-for-3 in the second game with three runs and one RBI. Crystal Vargas (Jersey City, NJ) was 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI in the second game.

    Freshman Christine Czarnecki (Hamilton, NJ) got the win in her starting debut, pitching all 5.0 innings. Czarnecki (1-0) allowed six hits, four runs (three earned) and four walks, while striking out three.

    The Scarlet Knights will host a doubleheader against Pittsburgh on Saturday at noon and will host Virginia Tech in a doubleheader on Sunday, also beginning at noon.

    • Rutgers is now leads the series against St. Joseph’s, 22-8, under the direction of head coach Pat Willis.

    • Nikki Childress (Roanoke, VA) is ranked 17th in the NCAA for batting average, as of April 21. At the time of the rankings, she had played in 27 games, with 75 at bats and 33 hits, leaving her with a .440 average. Brittney Neer (Tallahassee, FL) is ranked 30th in the NCAA, as of April 21, in stolen bases. She had played in 27 games, and was successful in 14 of her 15 stolen base attempts (.520 sb/g). In today’s games, Childress hit two home runs and Neer stole two bases.

    • Rutgers was also in the BIG EAST standings, most recently distributed on April 21. As a team, Rutgers is sixth in batting with an average of .263 and seventh in pitching with an overall ERA of 2.79. Nikki Childress (Roanoke, VA) leads the conference in several categories, ranking first in individual batting with a .440. She is also first in on base percentage (.494) and slugging percentage (.707).

    • Brittney Neer (Tallahasse, FL) ranks first in stolen bases with 17. Jenny Card (Miami, FL) is third in walks (18) and fourth in on base percentage (.451). Meaghan Asselta (Ramsey, NJ) is seventh in on base percentage with a .430.

    • Andria Koehler (Sellersville, PA) ranks in several BIG EAST pitching categories, ranking seventh in wins (10), seventh in innings pitched (110.0), fifth in shutouts (4) and fifth in complete games (13).
