  • VILLANOVA, PA - The Rutgers softball team (20-15-3-7 BIG EAST) split a doubleheader with Villanova (20-9-1, 7-3 BIG EAST) on April 19, winning the first game, 2-0, and the losing the second game, 6-5.

In the first game of the day, Andria Koehler (Sellersville, PA) pitched a complete game for her fourth shutout. Koehler had four strikeouts, allowing three hits and no walks to improve her record to 10-4.

The Scarlet Knights earned both runs of the game in the sixth inning. Courtney Love (Seabrook, TX) singled to second base and advanced to second on a groundout by Melissa Bradford (Pennsville, NJ). Jenny Card (Miami, FL) singled to right field and advanced to second on a fielding error, sending Love home. Crystal Vargas (Jersey City, NJ) singled down the left-field line to score Marisa Orsogna (Edison, NJ), who was pinch running for Card. Love led the offense, going 2-for-4 in the game with one run scored.

The first game was a test of defense, but the second game became an offensive battle. Rutgers took an early lead, scoring one run in the first inning and two in the second, but the Wildcats answered with two runs in the fourth, making the score 3-2. Rutgers gained two more runs in the sixth, but Villanova came back to take the victory with four runs in the bottom of the sixth, making the final score 6-5.

Love led the offense again, hitting 2-for-3 with two runs. Bradford helped out at designated player, going 2-for-2 with one RBI.

Vargas hit her fourth homerun of the season, a two-run bomb to left center in the sixth inning, her second in a conference game.

Brittney Neer (Tallahassee, FL) led the team on the field with several stellar defensive plays, finishing the day with nine putouts and six assists at second base.

Villanova was ranked fourth in BIG EAST standings going into the games against Rutgers. As of April 14, the Wildcats led the league in hitting and on-base percentage. Theresa Hornick, who pitched the first game, led all conference pitchers in opponent batting average. RU had five hits and two runs (one earned) against Hornick.

The Scarlet Knights will host Saint Joseph’s in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23 in the first of three home games. RU hosts Pittsburgh in a doubleheader beginning at noon on Saturday, April 26, and Virginia Tech, also at noon, on Sunday, April 27.
