  • PROVIDENCE, RI - The Rutgers softball team (16-13, 2-6 BIG EAST) split a BIG EAST doubleheader against Providence College (11-13, 1-7 BIG EAST), winning the first game 5-2 and falling in the nightcap 3-0.

In the first game, the Friars scored in the first inning when Michelle Willette banged a two-run homerun.

The Scarlet Knights got on the board in the third inning when Megan Antonucci (Warrington, PA) sent a shot out to left field to send home Nikki Childress (Roanoke, VA), who got on base from a double down the left line. Melissa Bradford (Pennsville, NJ) stole home on a wild pitch to tie the score at 2.

The score remained tied until Childress led off the fifth inning with a homerun to left field. The hit was Childress’ fourth of the year and first in a BIG EAST game. Jen Jacoby (Agoura Hills, CA) smacked a double over the left fielder’s head to send home Antonucci, advanced to third on the throw home and then scored on Nichole Cruz’s (Bermerton, WA) single up the middle to put the Scarlet Knights up, 5-2.

Andria Koehler (Sellersville, PA) captured her first BIG EAST victory and seventh win of the season. Koehler pitched all seven innings, allowing only five hits and two runs, walking no one and striking out seven. Childress led the offense, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI and Antonucci was 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored.

The second game of the doubleheader resulted in a 3-0 shutout by the Friars. Brielle Cosentino (Carlstadt, NJ) pitched the first 2.1 innings of the second game, giving up four hits and two runs, while striking one batter out. Koehler relieved Cosentino for the last 3.2 innings, allowing four hits, one run and striking out four.

The Friars picked up the first run of the game in the second inning, another in the third and then increased the lead to three in the fourth inning, where it stayed for the remainder of the game.

The Scarlet Knights will host the Monmouth Hawks on Tuesday, April 15 in a doubleheader, starting at 3 p.m. at the Rutgers Softball Complex.
