  • STORRS, CT - The Rutgers softball team was swept by Connecticut in a BIG EAST doubleheader, 2-0 and 10-2, Sunday in Storrs, CT. The Scarlet Knights fall to15-12, 1-5 BIG EAST while UConn improves to 13-13-1, 2-0 BIG EAST.

Andria Koehler (Sellersville, PA) pitched the first game, allowing eight hits and two runs (one earned) in six innings. Koehler walked two and struck out six.

The game remained scoreless for the first four innings of the game, with Connecticut scoring one run in the bottom of the fifth and one in the sixth for the win. The Scarlet Knights had a team total of three hits, versus the Huskies’ eight in the 2-0 shutout.

In the second game of the day, the Scarlet Knights again had a team total of three hits, but were able to transfer those hits into two runs. The Huskies, however, had nine hits for ten runs to outscore RU.

UConn got off to a quick start, scoring two runs in the first inning and another in the third. The Huskies picked up two more in the fourth and Rutgers tried to answer with two of its own in the fifth, but Connecticut had a five-run sixth inning to seal the game.

The two runs for RU were scored by Megan Antonucci (Warrington,PA) and Jen Jacoby (Agoura Hills, CA). Antonucci reached first on an error by the pitcher, advanced to second on a wild pitch and took third on Jacoby’s fielder’s choice. Antonucci stole home, Jacoby stole second and then scored on a passed ball.

Brielle Cosentino (Carlstadt, NJ) pitched the first 2.1 innings of the game, giving up three runs, two earned, on four hits. She gave up one walk and struck out three.

Christina Gillman (Valencia, CA) pitched the remaining 3.1 innings, with seven runs scored on five hits (two earned). She struck out one and walked two.

The Scarlet Knights were on a BIG EAST road trip, with games scheduled at Boston College on April 5 and UConn on April 6. The games against Boston College have been postponed due to weather conditions. Rutgers is next scheduled to travel to Hempstead, NY, to play against Hofstra on Wednesday, April 9 at 3 p.m.
