  • NEW YORK, NY - The Rutgers softball team (15-10, 1-3 BIG EAST) swept Columbia University in a doubleheader, 6-2, 6-0, at the Columbia University Softball Field Wednesday afternoon.

In the first game of the day, the offense started rallying in the first at bat. Meaghan Asselta (Ramsey, NJ), who went 3-for-3 and scored two runs in the game, hit a double to right field, advancing Courtney Love (Seabrook, TX) to third. Nikki Childress (Roanoke, VA), also going 3-for-3 with two runs scored, hit a single to center field sending home Love and Asselta, while Childress then scored on a double by Melissa Bradford (Pennsville, NJ).

In the third inning, the Scarlet Knights sealed the victory with three more runs, all driven in by Jenny Card’s (Miami, FL) second home run of the season. The Lions scored two more runs in the bottom of the third, but it wasn’t enough to take the lead, ending the game, 6-2.

Andria Koehler (Sellersville, PA) pitched all seven innings, improving her record to 6-3. She allowed seven hits, two earned runs and one walk, striking out five.

Christina Gillman (Valencia, CA) pitched the first four innings of the second game shutout, improving her record to 4-2. She allowed only four hits and one walk, with one strikeout. Brielle Cosentino (Carlstadt, NJ) provided relief for the last three innings, allowing only one hit and one walk, striking out two.

The third inning of the second game brought Jen Jacoby’s (Agoura Hills, CA) first career home run and the first run of the game. Brittney Neer (Tallahassee, FL) scored in the fifth inning after singling to center field and stealing second. Jacoby’s single to right field plated Neer to make the score 2-0.

The sixth inning proved to be the game clincher, as Rutgers scored four more runs. Jenny Card provided the biggest blow with a three-run double and she later scored on a triple by Neer.
The Scarlet Knights will travel to Boston College for a doubleheader this Saturday, April 5, starting at 12 p.m. They will then play a doubleheader against UConn on Sunday, April 6, starting at 12 p.m., before heading back to New Jersey.
