CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Rutgers softball team closed out the University of North Carolina Tournament with a 7-3 loss to Liberty University at the UNC Softball Complex on Sunday.
Sophomores Amanda Shaw (Yorba Linda, Calif.), Sarah Kalka (Moreno Valley, Calif.), Brittany Loisel (Gilbert, Ariz.) and Amanda Heller (Belle Mead, N.J.) all collected hits for the Scarlet Knights. Kalka and Heller both had doubles in the game, while Shaw, Kalka and Loisel accounted for RU's three runs.
Sophomore Chrissy Yard (Hillsborough, N.J.) took the loss for the Scarlet Knights (4-10), allowing four hits and three earned runs in 1.1 innings. Seniors Nicole Freeman (Sandy, Utah) and Jess Crosby (Mill Creek, Wash.) both came in as relief as Freeman struck out two in 2.2 innings and Crosby retired one batter in 1.1 innings of work.
Liberty took a 3-0 lead in the second when Dawn Jeffs hit a homer to right field, brining in Jessica Leary and Courtney Johnson.
The Scarlet Knights cut the lead to one (3-2) in the top of the fourth when Kalka doubled to left centerfield and plated Shaw who was walked to open the inning. The Flames responded, however, with a three-run fourth inning of their own to own a 6-2 lead heading into the fifth.
After a scoreless at-bat from both teams, Liberty scored again in the bottom of the sixth inning to lead 7-2 heading into the Scarlet Knights' final at-bat.
With two outs and one on, junior Christine Royland (Westwood, N.J.) was walked, advancing Loisel to second. Shaw singled down the leftfield line, loading the bases for senior Kristin Madoch (Glenview, Ill.) who was walked, scoring RU's final run.
Rutgers will travel to Philadelphia, Pa., on Saturday, March 10, for a non-conference match-up with Drexel. Game time is slated for 11:00 a.m.
