CHICAGO, IL - The Rutgers softball team (12-32, 4-12 BIG EAST) dropped its BIG EAST doubleheader to DePaul (22-15, 7-5 BIG EAST) on Saturday, April 22, at Cacciatore Stadium in Chicago, IL. The Blue Demons took game one 8-3 and game two 6-3.
DePaul jumped out to a 7-0 lead on a four-run first and three-run second inning. After an RBI double to left-center field gave the Blue Demons their first score of the game, Sandy Vojik followed with a three-run home run to make the score 4-0. In the second, a pair of RBI singles and a wild pitch helped DePaul tack on three more runs to its lead (7-0).
Rutgers got on the scoreboard in the fourth when freshman Brittany Loisel (Gilbert, AZ) reached first on a fielding error by DePaul’s shortstop. Junior Kristin Madoch (Glenview, IL) followed with a single up the middle and advanced to second, while Loisel took third. Freshman Kaitlyn Valiante (Mt. Laurel, NJ), the team leader in RBI, delivered the Scarlet Knights first two runs of the game with a two-run double to left field.
The Blue Demons added another run in the sixth with a Kate Sheaks home run to left field, extending their lead to 8-2.
Loisel would strike again in the seventh as she crushed her first career collegiate home run, bringing RU within five (8-3). The Scarlet Knights proceeded to load the bases but the late charge was not enough as DePaul picked up the 8-3 victory.
Freshman Christina Yard (Hillsborough, NJ) took the game one loss (5-11), while junior Nicole Freeman (Sandy, UT) joined her in relief. Freeman struck out six batters in five innings of action.
In game two, the Blue Demons scored a pair of runs over the first and second innings to take a 2-0 advantage. Freshman Amanda Heller (Belle Mead, NJ) singled to left field in the third and eventually scored on an RBI double to center field from classmate Amanda Shaw (Yorba Linda, CA).
DePaul drove in three runs in the home half of the inning to widen its lead to 5-1, but Rutgers would respond in the fourth with two runs of its own.
Freshman Kim Hodges (Houston, TX) led off with a double to right-center field, followed by sophomore Shantai Dixon (Sayreville, NJ) and Loisel, who each earned walks to load the bases. Shaw then singled to left field, driving in Hodges, while a misplayed ball by the Blue Demon outfield also allowed for Dixon to come home and score. A sacrifice fly from Linda Secka gave DePaul another run as the Blue Demons claimed a 6-3 win.
Junior Jessica Crosby (Sedro-Woolley, WA) was saddled with the loss (1-5) in game two, while senior Christina Gillman (Valencia, CA) also made an appearance in relief.
The Scarlet Knights will return to action on Sunday, April 23, for an 11:00 am doubleheader against BIG EAST foe Notre Dame. Live audio and stats will be available for both games via http://und.cstv.com.
