  • PISCATAWAY, NJ - Freshman Kaitlyn Valiante (Mt. Laurel, NJ) had a hand in each of the Scarlet Knights’ two runs, as the Rutgers softball team (9-27) defeated the Rider Broncs (14-18) by a score of 2-1. Game two of the scheduled doubleheader was cancelled due to heavy rain.

The game remained knotted at zero through the first three innings, before the Broncs would take a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth. Aimee Schiller hit a single up the middle and was eventually plated on back-to-back singles from Katy Mills and Jennifer Cullen.

The Scarlet Knights tied things up in the sixth inning on a leadoff home run from Valiante. Valiante took a pitch by Rider’s Heather Beintema and lifted it just over the left-field fence for her fourth round-tripper of the season.

The contest stayed tight with both teams leaving runners in scoring position as it headed into extra innings. In the bottom of the 10th, Rutgers would finally plate the game-winning run. Freshman Brittany Loisel (Gilbert, AZ) led off with a single through the left side, followed by classmate Amanda Shaw (Yorba Linda, CA), who reached base on an error by the Broncs’ second base.

The game was then briefly halted as rain showers passed over the RU Softball Complex. Following the short delay, Valiante stepped up to bat with runners (Loisel and Shaw) on first and second. She hit a pitch sharply to left-center, driving in Loisel for the game-clinching score (2-1).

Valiante finished the day 2-for-4 with a walk, a run scored and two runs-batted-in, while Loisel went 3-for-5, scoring the Scarlet Knights other run. Junior Nicole Freeman (Sandy, UT) earned her 10th start of the season, allowing one run on five hits with three strikeouts in 4.0 innings of action.

Freshman Christina Yard (Hillsborough, NJ) picked up the win (4-9) as the pitcher of record when the Scarlet Knights claimed the lead. Yard put forth an outstanding performance as she held the Broncs without a run on just two hits in 6.0 innings of work. She also struck out a season-high seven batters and allowed zero walks.

The Scarlet Knights will be back in action on Saturday, April 15, for a BIG EAST doubleheader against Villanova. First pitch is set for 12:00 pm at the RU Softball Complex.
