  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers softball team (5-39) earned a doubleheader sweep against the visiting Fairleigh Dickinson Knights (10-24), 14-7 and 7-5, April 28 at the RU Softball Complex.

In game one, FDU jumped out to a quick lead in the first, thanks to a two-run double by Courtney Rejent. However, Rutgers answered back in the bottom of the inning, evening the score with RBI from senior Jenny Card (Miami, FL) and freshman Lauren Tardiff (Manchester, NJ).

Fairleigh Dickinson tacked on an unearned run in the third, but that lead was short lived, as Rutgers exploded for six runs in the bottom half of the inning. Kristen Madoch’s (Glenview, IL) leadoff triple was followed by Stephanie Johannsen’s (Penn Valley, CA) run-scoring fielder’s choice. Johannsen moved to second on a wide throw home, and the next batter, Helen Smith (Tucson, AZ), drew a walk, setting the stage for Card’s three-run home run down the left-field line. Maggie Geraldi (Russell, IL) later doubled and scored on Hilary King’s (Canal Winchester, OH) third round-tripper of the year.

Caitlyn Reuter was able to get a drive up into the wind blowing out to left-center field, a three-run shot that drew FDU back to within two (8-6) in the fourth. But, in the fifth, RU was able to plate three unearned runs. Tardiff, the leadoff hitter, reached on an error, and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and a fielder’s choice. Pinch hitter Shantai Dixon (Sayreville, NJ) knocked a single through the left side to score Tardiff, and the next batter, Mallory Miller (Anaheim, CA), launched a shot to right field for her first career home run.

The Scarlet Knights added three more runs in the sixth. Smith, leading off, was hit by a pitch, followed by a walk for Card. Three batters later, King hit her second home run of the game, finishing the scoring for RU.

Madoch went 3-for-4 for the Scarlet Knights, while King had two home runs and five RBI. Junior Christina Gillman (Valencia, CA) picked up the victory (1-12), striking out seven hitters in six innings. Freshman Christine Rabadan (Washington Twp., NJ) threw the final inning for the Scarlet Knights. Ashley Buchanan (3-9) suffered the loss, allowing 11 hits and 14 runs, 11 earned, in six innings.

Rutgers jumped out to a first-inning lead in the nightcap, thanks to a two-run homer by Smith. The Scarlet Knights held FDU hitless until the fourth, when Fairleigh Dickinson strung together four hits for three runs. A leadoff solo home run in the top of the fifth pushed FDU’s advantage to two (4-2).

RU regained the lead with three runs in the fifth. Madoch led off with a two-base error by the left fielder, and was replaced by pinch runner Gillman. A single by Xaymara Rodriguez (Paterson, NJ) and a fielder’s choice off the bat of Johannsen loaded the bases. A fielder’s choice was followed by Card drawing an RBI walk, Tardiff lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, and King doubled down the left-field line to score the final run of the inning.

A triple and a passed ball evened the score at 5-5 in the top of the sixth, but Smith’s two-run double down the right-field line in the bottom half of the inning nudged the Scarlet Knights ahead for good, 7-5.

Smith led the RU offense in game two, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI.

Lindsay Creaney (Atco, NJ) allowed six hits and four runs, three earned, in 4.1 innings. Alicia Piniat (Scotch Plains, NJ) scattered two hits and gave up one run in 2.2 innings, earning the victory (2-5). Jennifer Buehler allowed eight hits and seven runs, four earned, in suffering the loss (5-7).

The Scarlet Knights will return to action Saturday, April 30, with a doubleheader at Villanova. First pitch will be at 12:00 p.m.
