  • SYRACUSE, NY – Senior Stephanie Johannsen (Penn Valley, CA) had an outstanding performance at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with two homeruns and four RBI in game one, but unfortunately Rutgers (3-37, 1-11 BIG EAST) fell in its BIG EAST doubleheader 12-4 and 14-1 to Syracuse (26-15, 11-3 BIG EAST) on Sunday, April 24, at the SU Softball Stadium.

The Scarlet Knights took an early lead in the first, as Johannsen recorded her first homerun of the season, a solo shot to right-field, giving RU a 1-0 advantage.

Syracuse evened things up in the bottom of the inning when Chanel Roehner doubled to left-center and later advanced to third on a wild pitch. Roehner eventually crossed the plate on a ground ball to second from Cassie Morales.

Johannsen continued to lead the Rutgers charge in the third, driving in three runs for the Scarlet Knights.

Senior Marisa Orsogna (Edison, NJ) led off the inning with a bunt single, followed by sophomore Kristin Madoch (Glenview, IL), who walked to put runners on first and second. Johannsen gave RU the three-run edge with her second homerun of the game, plating Orsogna and Madoch.

The Orange closed the gap in the third and later took the lead on a grand-slam to left-field from Erin Gray to make the score 7-4. Syracuse scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to secure the 12-4, five-inning victory.

Junior Christina Gillman (Valencia, CA) suffered the loss (0-11), going 2.1 innings and allowing seven runs on seven hits, while senior Alicia Piniat (Scotch Plains, NJ) pitched 2.0 innings in relief, giving up five runs on six hits. The Orange’s Erin Downey picked up the win (15-6), surrendering four runs on four hits in 5.0 innings of action.

In game two, Syracuse got off to a quick start, scoring five runs on five hits, including a solo homerun by Courtney Mosch in the second.

Freshman Shantai Dixon (Sayreville, NJ) entered the game to pinch hit for freshman Hilary King (Canal Winchester, OH) in the third and earned a walk to start the inning.

Freshman Lauren Goldrick (Commack, NY) replaced Dixon on the bases and advanced to third on a busted pick off attempt, before coming home on a Madoch single to left-field to give RU its first run of the game.

The Orange opened up a nine-run inning in the fourth, as they pulled away with the 14-1 victory.

Senior Lindsay Creaney (Atco, NJ) took the loss (0-7) in game two, allowing eight earned runs on 12 hits in 3.0 innings of action, while Piniat made her second appearance of the day, giving up three runs on three hits in 1.0 relief innings. Mosch earned the victory (10-9), going 5.0 innings, allowing one run (zero earned) on two hits.

The Scarlet Knights will conclude their three-opponent road trip on Tuesday, April 26, as they take on the University of Delaware Fightin Blue Hens at 2:30 p.m.
