  • LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Rutgers University softball team (3-29) won the first game of its doubleheader against the Rider University Broncs 8-5 and fell in game two by a score 13-5 on Thursday, April 14 in Lawrenceville, NJ.

Rider got on the board quickly, taking a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

The Scarlet Knights responded quickly in the second, as freshman Hilary King (Canal Winchester, OH) led off the inning with her second homerun of the season, a solo shot to left-center, cutting the lead to one, 2-1. Freshman Lauren Tardiff (Manchester, NJ) followed with a single to the shortstop and freshman Shantai Dixon (Sayreville, NJ) earned a walk to put runners on the bags for RU.

Senior Marisa Orsogna (Edison, NJ) moved the runners to second and third on a sacrifice bunt and senior Stephanie Johannsen (Penn Valley, CA) doubled to left-field, scoring both Tardiff and Dixon. In the very next at bat, sophomore Maggie Geraldi (Russell, IL) helped Rutgers take a 4-2 lead with an RBI triple to centerfield.

The Broncs’ Kristin Kenavan led off the fourth inning with a double to center and later advanced to third on a sac bunt by Maddy Boulden, before scoring on Ashley Boulden’s sacrifice fly to left-field.

Rutgers tacked on another run in the top of the sixth when Johannsen doubled to right-center, eventually scoring on an RBI single from senior Helen Smith (Tucson, AZ) to make the score 5-3 in RU’s favor.

Rider scored two more runs in the seventh to send the game into extra innings, but the Scarlet Knights were able to pull away in the eighth and seal the 8-5 victory. Orsogna started the inning off with a walk and advanced to second on a sac bunt by freshman Xaymara Rodriguez (Paterson, NJ). Johannsen tripled to center, scoring Orsogna, while Geraldi singled through the right side to bring home Johannsen.

Junior Christina Gillman (Valencia, CA) started the game for the Scarlet Knights, giving up two earned runs on nine hits and four strikeouts. Senior Alicia Piniat (Scotch Plains, NJ) picked up the win in relief (1-4), allowing two runs on four hits in 2.0 innings of action.

Smith went 4-for-5 with an RBI in game one, while Johannsen was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI. Geraldi also had a strong game, going 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored and Tardiff finished 3-for-4 with a run scored.

In game two, the Broncs jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after the second inning, but RU struck back, scoring a pair of runs in the third.

With two outs in the third inning, Johannsen reached first on a fielder’s choice and advanced to second on a wild pitch by Rider’s Jessica Holland. Smith later singled to centerfield, putting runners on the corners for the Scarlet Knights, as senior Jenny Card (Miami, FL) hit a two-run single down the right-field line in her next at bat to score both Johannsen and Smith, and cut the Rider lead to 4-2.

The Broncs extended their lead to 9-2 with a five-run inning in the third. RU put together several runs over the course of the next two innings, but the rally fell short as Rider claimed the 13-5 victory.

In the fourth, Tardiff led off with a triple down the right-field line and came home on a wild pitch. Rutgers scored its next two runs in the fifth as Geraldi starting things off with a walk, followed by Smith’s single to left-field. Card doubled to left, driving in Smith and freshman Jessica Cien (Chula Vista, CA), who entered the game as a pinch runner for Geraldi.

Card finished 2-for-3 with four RBI in game two and Smith went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Senior Lindsay Creaney (Atco, NJ) suffered the loss for Rutgers (0-5), allowing 13 runs on 16 hits and three strikeouts in 4.2 innings of work.
