  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers University softball team (2-28) split a pair of games against visiting Princeton (25-10), 3-12 and 3-1, April 12 at the RU Softball Complex. The doubleheader was a make-up after the original March 24 scheduled meeting was postponed due to adverse weather conditions.

Princeton struck first, leading the first game off with a double to right-center. A comebacker for a single and a walk later loaded the bases, and Beth Dalmut’s one-out grounder to the shortstop drove in the game’s first run.

The Tigers added another run in the second. A leadoff single, followed by a sacrifice bunt and two shallow singles to right field, loaded the bases with one out. A sacrifice fly plated the second run of the day, but the Scarlet Knights were able to catch the Tiger on second base in a run-down to end the inning.

Princeton then exploded with a five-run third inning, highlighted by a two-run home run to left-center field. A solo shot down the left-field line in the top of the fourth made the score 8-0 in Princeton’s favor.

Rutgers struck back in the bottom of the fourth. Senior Jenny Card (Miami, FL) singled under the third baseman’s glove with two outs. She was lifted for pinch runner Jessica Cien (Chula Vista, CA), who promptly stole second. Sophomore Maggie Geraldi (Russell, IL) hit a tailing soft liner down the right field line that was mishandled by the Princeton outfielder, plating Cien for RU’s first run of the day. Freshman Christine Royland (Westwood, NJ) was then called upon to pinch hit, and delivered her first career home run, a two-run liner that snuck just inside the left foul pole, to pull the Scarlet Knights to within five at 8-3.

The Tigers answered with four runs in the top of the fifth inning, including their third home run of the game, to end the scoring at 12-3.

Junior Christina Gillman (Valencia, CA) suffered the loss for Rutgers (0-8), allowing eight hits and six earned runs in 2.1 innings of work. Lindsay Creaney (Atco, NJ) pitched 2.2 innings in relief, allowing eight hits and six earned runs. Calli Jo Varner pitched a complete game for the Tigers (4-1), allowing five hits and three runs, all unearned.

Sophomore Kristin Madoch (Glenview, IL) got the Scarlet Knights off to a quick start in game two, leading off the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run, her second of the season. Rutgers tacked on another run in the second. Freshman Xaymara Rodriguez (Paterson, NJ) popped a single just behind the third baseman, and advanced to second as the ball squirted foul, off the glove of the outstretched shortstop. She later moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a Stephanie Johannsen (Penn Valley, CA) single through the right side of the infield.

Princeton got on the scoreboard with a run in the fifth. A leadoff two-base error, followed by a sacrifice bunt and a single to center, cut the Scarlet Knights’ lead in half (2-1).

Card drove a long fly ball down the left-field line for her third home run of the year, giving the Scarlet Knights an insurance run in the fifth.

Card and Geraldi each went 2-for-3 in game two to lead the RU offense.

Sophomore Jessica Crosby (Sedro-Wooley, WA) earned the complete-game victory (2-6), giving up 10 hits and zero earned runs while registering five strikeouts. Princeton’s Amelia Runyan suffered the loss (0-1), allowing six hits and two runs in 3.0 innings.

The Scarlet Knights will return to action Thursday, April 14, with a doubleheader at Rider at 3:00 p.m. RU’s next appearance at the Rutgers Softball Complex will be Saturday, April 16, for a BIG EAST Conference twinbill against St. John’s at 12:00 p.m.
