  • STORRS, CT – An outstanding pitching performance from sophomore Jessica Crosby (Sedro-Woolley, WA) helped the Rutgers University softball team (1-27, 1-5 BIG EAST) pick up its first victory of the season, as the Scarlet Knights split a doubleheader with the University of Connecticut Huskies on Sunday, April 10, at the UConn Softball Field in Storrs, CT. RU won game one by a score of 2-1 and fell in game two 5-0.

Sophomore Kristin Madoch (Glenview, IL) led things off in game one with a single to right field and advanced to second with a walk by senior Stephanie Johannsen (Penn Valley, CA). Senior Helen Smith (Tucson, AZ) record a sac bunt to move both runners over and Madoch later scored on a ground out to the shortstop.

The Huskies tied the game in the sixth when Mandy Schettini earned a one-out walk and Holly Calcagno was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Allie Gendron followed with a single down the left field line to plate Schettini.

RU rallied in the seventh as senior Jenny Card (Miami, FL) walked to lead off the inning. Junior Christina Gillman (Valencia, CA) entered the game as a pinch runner for Card and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from freshman Hilary King (Canal Winchester, OH), while sophomore Maggie Geraldi (Russell, IL) doubled to right centerfield in the next bat, scoring Gillman from second.

Crosby pitched a complete game with five shutout innings and allowed just three hits and one run on two strikeouts.

In game two, UConn’s Stephanie DiBiase doubled down the leftfield line and later advanced to third on a sac bunt by Ashleigh Campen, before eventually scoring on single to center from Jen D’Angelo. The Huskies extended their lead in the fifth inning; scoring three runs, including an RBI double to right center by Campen, as Connecticut pulled away with the 5-0 victory.

The Scarlet Knights will return to the field on Tuesday, April 12, to take on the Princeton University Tigers at 3:00 p.m.
