  • WEST POINT, NY – The Rutgers University softball team (0-24, 0-2 BIG EAST) fell in its doubleheader to Army by scores of 11-6 and 10-2 at the Army Softball Complex on Wednesday, April 6.

In game one, Army jumped out to a commanding lead in the first inning, scoring six runs on eight hits including a three-run homerun by the Black Knight’s Lindsey Gerheim. Army plated three more runs in the second, before the Scarlet Knights were able to break through in the top of the third. Sophomore Kristin Madoch (Glenview, IL) and senior Stephanie Johannsen (Penn Valley, CA) led off the inning with back-to-back singles, while freshman Hilary King (Canal Winchester, OH) earned a walk to load the bases. Sophomore Maggie Geraldi (Russell, IL) followed with a sacrifice fly to centerfield, driving in Madoch from third to make the score 9-1.

The Scarlet Knights’ biggest inning came in the fifth as they scored five runs to cut the Army lead to three. With runners on first and third, Geraldi recorded her second RBI of the game with a double that drove in junior Christina Gillman (Valencia, CA), who entered the game as a pinch runner. In RU’s next at bat, senior Jenny Card (Miami, FL) picked up her second homerun of the season with a three-run blast to center.

Freshman Lauren Tardiff (Manchester, NJ) entered game one in the second to provide the Scarlet Knights with three scoreless innings, before allowing two scores in the sixth, as Army pulled away with the 11-6 victory.

Rutgers opened game two of the doubleheader with the bases loaded after Madoch reached first on an Army fielding error and back-to-back hits by Johannsen and King. The Scarlet Knights scored the game’s first run when Madoch crossed the plate on a passed ball by the Black Knight’s Mary Ann Kearney.

Army responded to the early deficit to score eight runs over the next two innings and lead the game 8-1. Madoch singled to left field to drive in senior Marisa Orsogna (Edison, NJ) from third and give RU its second run of the game.

Rutgers will conclude its three-opponent road trip with doubleheaders against the Providence Friars on Saturday, April 9, and Connecticut Huskies on Sunday, April 10.
