  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – Senior Helen Smith (Tucson, AZ) provided the Scarlet Knights with timely hitting, but it was not enough to overcome a surging Pittsburgh Panther team in softball action at the Rutgers Softball Complex on Monday, April 4.

Sophomore Jessica Crosby (Sedro-Woolley, WA) made her return to field, going five innings and allowing six runs on 11 hits, as Rutgers (0-22, 0-2 BIG EAST) fell to the University of Pittsburgh by a score of 7-4 in game one. With the Pitt lead stretched to 4-0 entering the fifth inning, RU received solid contributions from a number of its players. The Scarlet Knights put two runners on base and with two outs, Smith delivered a three-run homerun to centerfield. Freshman Hilary King (Canal Winchester, OH) doubled in the very next at bat, while sophomore Maggie Geraldi (Russell, IL) singled to right center to plate King and tie the ballgame at 4-4.

Rutgers had its final opportunity in the bottom of the seventh when sophomore Kristin Madoch (Glenview, IL) doubled to right field to start the inning, followed by two consecutive walks by Smith and King to load the bases. With the score at 7-4, Pittsburgh’s Meghan Bostick secured the game’s final two outs as she forced the next two Scarlet Knight batters to fly out.

The Panthers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second inning of game two, but a late rally by the Scarlet Knights in the seventh fell just short, as RU lost 4-1. King recorded her first collegiate homerun in the sixth inning with a line drive shot over the centerfield fence. Smith ended the day 4-for-6 with three RBI and one run scored, while King finished 3-for-4 with a run scored and one run batted in.

The Scarlet Knights return to action on Wednesday, April 6, as they travel to West Point, NY to face Army in a doubleheader that it scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
