  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – A five-run first inning in the opener and a six-run second in the nightcap propelled Wagner to a doubleheader sweep of Rutgers (8-3, 12-4) this afternoon in non-conference softball action at the RU Softball Complex. Wagner improves to 10-6 while Rutgers falls to 0-18.

It was a rough beginning for RU starter Alicia Piniat, making her collegiate debut after starring for the university’s club team last spring. Piniat, a Scotch Plains native, allowed five runs in the opening inning, including a two-run double and two-run home run, but settled down nicely, allowing just three runs over the final six innings. The RU offense scored all three of its runs in the third, as Hillary King opened with a walk and scored on a one-out double from Crystal Vargas. Vargas then stole third and scored on a single by Courtney Love, while Helen Smith followed with a single of her own to plate Love and cut the gap to 6-3.

In the nightcap, Wagner and Rutgers each scored a single run in the first, but the Seahawks opened the second with a pair of walks and a single to take a 2-1 lead. Christy Sykora delivered the big hit in the inning, driving a two-run double to the fence in right-center and scored on a wild pitch for a 7-1 lead. Leading 7-2 in the fourth, Wagner’s Christina Hopkins hit a grand slam to increase the lead to 11-2.

Rutgers rallied for a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth, as Marisa Orsogna opened with a single and Vargas doubled to put runners on second and third with no outs. Love (sacrifice fly) and Kristen Madoch (double) each knocked in a run to cut the lead to 11-4, but Wagner added a single run in the fifth to increase its lead to 12-4, leading to a stoppage in play after five innings.

Lindsay Creaney (0-1), also making her first start after spending last spring with the club team, suffered the game two loss. Orsogna led RU with a 3-for-3 effort, while Madoch was 2-for-3.

Rutgers returns to action on Wednesday, March 30, when it hosts Hofstra in a doubleheader at 2:00 p.m.
