  • CLEARWATER, FL – Sophomore Jessica Crosby (Sedro-Woolley, WA) pitched effectively in 5.2 scoreless innings, allowing only three hits on two strikeouts, but a late seventh inning rally by Villanova was enough to top the Rutgers University softball team (0-11) by a score of 2-1, on the final day of competition at the Speedline Invitational on Sunday, March 13, in Clearwater, FL.

In a game dominated by pitching and defense, Rutgers and Villanova combined for 10 fly balls and 16 ground outs. Crosby began the game, retiring the side in the first and second inning with some help from her infield, as senior Jenny Card (Miami, FL) displayed her strong arm, throwing out Villanova’s Krissy Yauch on an attempt to steal second base.

Junior Courtney Love (Houston, TX) got the rally going for RU in the sixth inning with a single, while senior Crystal Vargas (Jersey City, NJ) reached on a fielder’s choice. Vargas then stole second base to put a runner in scoring position for the Scarlet Knights and sophomore Kristin Madoch (Glenview, IL) continued her hot hand as she drove in Vargas from second with a single up the middle, giving Rutgers a 1-0 lead. Madoch finished two-for-two with an RBI.

Nova responded in the bottom of the sixth when Sarah Wall singled through the left side with bases loaded, evening the score at 1-1. In the bottom of the seventh, VU secured the win, as Lisa Curran doubled to right field, followed by Sheri Donley’s single up the middle to drive in the game winning run.

The Scarlet Knights will compete in their final tournament of the season on Friday, March 18, when they travel to Charlottesville, VA for the Cavalier Classic. Rutgers will host its home opener on Thursday, March 24, against intrastate rival Princeton at 2:00 p.m.
