SOUTH ORANGE, NJ – Senior Brielle Cosentino (Carlstadt, NJ) (9-8) pitched a complete-game, five-hitter and allowed only one run in Rutgers’ 3-1 win at Seton Hall (37-15; 8-6) on May 1. The Pirates were victorious over RU (24-28-1; 7-11) in game one, 3-0.
With game two tied 1-1 in the sixth, junior Crystal Vargas (Jersey City, NJ) opened the inning with a double down the left field line. Freshman Jessica Crosby (Sedro-Woolley, WA) then followed with a single to score Vargas and give RU a 2-1 lead. The Scarlet Knights added an insurance run later in the inning when senior Nicole Casey (Churchville, PA) scored on junior Helen Smith’s (Tucson, AZ) single up the middle.
Smith finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and a walk, while senior Brittney Neer (Tallahassee, FL) also went 2-for-3 and stole her 18th base of the year. Crosby had a pair of hits and an RBI.
Seton Hall starting pitcher Megan Moyer (19-5) was sharp in game one, limiting the Scarlet Knights to only three hits in the Pirates’ 3-0 win. Senior Leah Black (Rocky River, OH) (9-11) also had a solid start. She pitched six innings and allowed two earned runs while striking out eight. Neer, Smith and Vargas each had a hit for RU.
The Scarlet Knights will play their final games of the regular season when they head to St. John’s for a doubleheader at noon on Sunday, May 2.
