PISCATAWAY, NJ - Rutgers senior Nikki Childress (Roanoke, VA) has been named the BIG EAST Conference Softball Co-Player of the Week, the league office announced April 19.
Childress finished the week 9-for-19 (.474) with nine RBI, two home runs and four runs scored, hitting safely in five of six games and connecting on a pair of game-winning home runs. In addition, she set the school’s all-time career home run record (18) against UConn April 17. Childress now has 19 home runs in two seasons at RU and 11 this year, which is good for first on the school’s single-season list.
In the most recent BIG EAST rankings, Childress is fourth in batting average (.378), second in home runs (11), ninth in RBI (26), eighth in total bases (72), ninth in on-base percentage (.430) and second in slugging percentage (.735).
Childress, who shared the award with Notre Dame’s Megan Ciolli, is the second RU player to earn BIG EAST Player of the Week honors this season. Senior Megan Antonucci (Warrington, PA) won the award on March 8.
The Scarlet Knights (21-22; 5-7 BIG EAST) began last week on a soggy note and had their doubleheaders with Rider and Saint Joseph’s postponed due to rain, but once the skies cleared, RU had one of its best weeks of the season. Rutgers went 4-2 and moved into a fourth-place tie with Boston College and Providence in the BIG EAST.
The Scarlet Knights will return to the field on Wednesday, April 21, when they travel to West Long Branch, NJ, to face Monmouth in a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader.
