  • PISCATAWAY, NJ - Senior Nikki Childress (Roanoke, VA) went 5-for-7 with a home run, five RBI and two runs scored and senior Leah Black (Rocky River, OH) recorded a pair of victories as the Rutgers softball team (21-22; 5-7 BIG EAST) swept a doubleheader from Boston College (25-19; 5-7), 3-1 in game one and 9-3 in game two, on April 18.

Game one was tied 1-1 in the sixth until junior Helen Smith (Tucson, AZ) reached base on a an infield single and Childress took a 3-0 pitch the other way for her 11th home run of the year and put RU ahead for good, 3-1.

The Scarlet Knights had tied the game in the fifth. Junior Crystal Vargas (Jersey City, NJ) drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a groundout from pinch hitter Courtney Love (Houston, TX). Vargas then came around to score as junior Stephanie Johannsen (Penn Valley, CA) singled deep into the hole at second base. Johannsen was 1-for-2 with an RBI in the game.

Senior Brielle Cosentino (Carlstadt, NJ) started for the Scarlet Knights and went 5.0 innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out three and walking none. Black (8-9) pitched the final two innings of scoreless relief for the victory.

BC struck first in the game, taking a 1-0 lead in the fourth. Erin Mackey lined a two-out single just over the out-stretched glove of Smith at third base and then scored on a double into the right field gap off the bat of Michelle Daly.

Childress continued her hot hitting in game two. Senior Megan Antonucci (Warrington, PA) started off the home half of the first with a single through the left side and moved to third on consecutive groundouts. Childress then ripped a single through the right side to bring home Antonucci and put the Scarlet Knights up 1-0.

RU added three more in the fifth on a pair of home runs. Childress led off the inning with a single and scored on senior Brittney Neer’s (Tallahassee, FL) first home run of the year. Two batters later, Vargas smashed a solo shot, her second of the year, to dead center field to give the Scarlet Knights a 4-0 lead and chase BC starter Michelle Daly from the game.

The Eagles pulled to within one after plating three runs in the sixth, but the Scarlet Knights responded by scoring five runs in the bottom half of the inning on six hits and a pair of Boston College errors to extend the lead to 9-3. Neer and Vargas both went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI, while Antonucci was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI. Black scattered five hits over seven innings and struck out three to earn her second victory of the day.

The Scarlet Knights will return to the field on Wednesday, April 21, when they travel to West Long Branch, NJ, to face Monmouth in a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader.
